Matilda Clementine or Clementine Florence

Hello!

Due a baby girl start of February and have narrowed it down to these choices. I probably wouldn’t shorten either first name day to day, but appreciate that other people might. We pronounce Clementine to rhyme with fine.

We’re based in the North East and haven’t met a child with either name. I appreciate Matilda is a lot more popular than Clementine, but this doesn’t bother me.

Would you rather be called Matilda or Clementine?

Clementine. X

Thepennysjustdropped · 29/10/2021 22:53

I love them both. My grandad used to sing the song "My darling Clementine" which has some rather dodgy lyrics Hmm but hopefully no one will know it!

Matilda Clementine

Ellmau · 30/10/2021 18:23

Clementine.

BeKindBeYou · 30/10/2021 19:26

Matilda Florence is a lovely name! :)

YorkshireSunshine · 30/10/2021 19:36

I like Clementine better, but if thinking nicknames I prefer Tilda to Clemmie Smile

MaryShelley1818 · 30/10/2021 19:55

Clementine is nice but Clem/Clemmie is absolutely awful.
Florence is gorgeous.
Matilda is really lovely but very popular (I'm in the North East and know loads - although if I loved a name this wouldn't bother me).

GuckGuckDoose · 30/10/2021 20:02

Matilda Florence 🙈🙈🙈

Clementine I just cannot get on board with. It’s the Clemmy/Clammy thing. Gives me the creeps.

Strangevipers · 30/10/2021 20:52

Flemmy clemmy

Or

Matilda , Tilly , mat, Marty, Tilda

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 30/10/2021 21:15

I like Clementine Florence best - although, in MNland, CF is the acronym for Cheeky Fucker (someone who massively takes advantage of others).

Hello Carrie

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 30/10/2021 21:21

Matilda Clementine. I prefer the "strong" feeling of the name (Empress Matilda) - plus if she does want a nn when older I think the various ones for Matilda are nicer (I don't like the sound of "Clem/Clemmie").

SirenSays · 30/10/2021 21:23

Matilda has much prettier nicknames imo, Clemmie/Clemmy sounds like an STI.

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 30/10/2021 21:27

Clementine Florence sounds like a biscuit

NessieMcNessface · 30/10/2021 21:54

I think Clementine Florence is absolutely beautiful and very unusual. I do know a teenager with a very similar first name to Clementine and she has always insisted on being called by her full name, no abbreviations.

anxiouscrazymum · 30/10/2021 21:54

I have a Matilda Clementine a Florence Raine, Beatrice Quinn love all of your suggested names 😍

timeisnotaline · 01/11/2021 05:41

I like them all but I like Clementine best, contemplating Clementine Grace fro my baby. I do like Tilly though!

Wannakisstheteacher · 12/11/2021 19:46

Matilda for sure. Clemmie is a horrible but inevitable nickname. It also feels very twee and not the sort of name you’d want as an adult.

sageandbasil · 12/11/2021 19:52

Matilda

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 12/11/2021 20:10

Both fabulous! You don’t need to decide now why don’t you wait and see what name fits her better when she’s born.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 12/11/2021 20:26

Both lovely, so I think you should disregard what Mumsnet says and pick your favourite.

You obviously want Clementine to feature somewhere. It may not bother you, but she would get people pronouncing it both ways. I know quite a few little Clementines - all pronounced ‘teen’, but I’ve heard some people call them ‘tyne’. Not a big deal I think, but something to consider. The Clementine I know very well is known as Clem, which suits her. I’m not a fan of Clemmie - and she does occasionally get called Clemmie by people who don’t know her and just assume she would shorten it to that. She corrects them and says ‘my name is Clem, or Clementine, not Clemmie!’

Matilda is easier from the pronunciation/nickname point of view. The Matilda’s I know are known as Matilda, Millie and Mattie.

LozMarieFielder · 13/11/2021 09:19

Clementine Florence.

Whilst Matilda Clementine flows better, Clementine is an all-time favourite of mine and looks gorgeous on paper with Florence.

Matilda is nice but Clementine is beautiful.

Twizbe · 13/11/2021 09:25

When you get down to 2 wait until baby is here and see which fits them both. Clementine is quite a 'big' name and might not work when you meet her.

My SiL is Clemency known to all as Clem. It's becoming a lot more popular than it was.

VenusClapTrap · 13/11/2021 17:11

Clementine. The world does not need yet another Matilda.

The Clementine that I know never shortens it. She wouldn’t answer to Clemmy.

lisaandalan · 18/11/2021 21:13

Clementine Florence. X
