It's a girl! We were fairly set on Mabli but today it sunk in that we're naming a person, not a doll or a pet and Mabli doesn't sound serious enough for a person somehow.
We're not convinced it suits an adult. What do you think? Any suggestions?

Mabel?

Maui69 · 12/10/2021 18:21

Mabli? How is this pronounced?

weebarra · 12/10/2021 18:22

Mabli is lovely. Is it Welsh?

MadeOfStarStuff · 12/10/2021 18:38

Mabli is lovely! Are you in Wales?

in 30 years there will be thousands of adults with cutesy names so it won’t overly stand out

Laloo4 · 12/10/2021 19:01

I think Mabli is beautiful, and it’s a perfectly established name that I think works fine for an adult too.

If you’re unsure, Mabel, Maren, Mirren or Merryn as alternatives?

Darceyhemingway · 12/10/2021 20:42

I'm pregnant and have picked this if we have a girl and for the last few days I've been worrying that it's not adulty enough but then I thought people have all sorts of names and they grow with their name- mostly. I really like it. Are you in England or Wales? I'm in England but am welsh so I'm hoping people don't struggle with it

Darceyhemingway · 12/10/2021 20:43

@Maui69 pronounced Mab-Lee

WeasilyPleased · 12/10/2021 22:33

Sorry for late reply. There was a bit of drama this end but sorted now.

We're English living in England but both have Welsh grandparents. I do love it.
We have a very Welsh surname so is it overkill?
Weirdly I'm not keen on Mabel. Probably due to a rude poem my dad taught me as a child! Mabli is still on the list.
Maybe we'll both have little Mablis, @Darceyhemingway Smile

It's popular in Wales.

It might lead to lots of 'are you welsh?' and 'how do you say it' questions - see pp

It's pronounced Mabbly

Darceyhemingway · 13/10/2021 22:12

@KirstenBlest I only know of one Mabli I'd never heard of it until she was born.
Glad you're in England too OP. Everyone who I've told loves it which I was really shocked as it is quite Welsh. Mabel has been suggested to me too but I don't like it either.

Zarene · 13/10/2021 22:18

I love Mabli. I’m in London with no Welsh connections, but it’s familiar to me.

It doesn’t sound cutesy to me at all, but it does sound friendly.

YodaiamsaidI · 13/10/2021 22:21

Ha I'm Welsh and never heard it,but lovely.

KirstenBlest · 14/10/2021 08:09

@Darceyhemingway, it's been on quite a few of the welsh names thread, but those are usually quite full of names that have been used a lot in the past.

As it is likely to have been used by only Welsh-speakers until recently, the numbers will be fairly low, but it could be extremely popular with Welsh-speaking parents.

Mabli is pretty but my favourite Welsh girls name is Angharad. Whatever you call her, congratulations!

SecretKeeper1 · 14/10/2021 14:59
