Whatever happened to Lauren

Inspired by a similar tread.

Whatever happened to the name Lauren?

As someone with a very common 80s name maybe it's the same but I'm surprised it hasnt made a comeback.

It sounds beautiful, the lovely L sound and with Wren being so popular I thought Lauren would be popular too. Also a great name if you are honouring a Laurence in the family.

As you can tell I really like it. So what's my hesitation?!?

Well I have to love it my 18 year old daughter is called it 😀

MadeOfStarStuff · 12/10/2021 18:25

I know a young Lauren (primary age), it was slightly surprising at first but in a good refreshing way not a wtf way. It’s definitely not as dated as some 70s/80s names like Hayley, Charlene etc

whatsyournamethisismine · 12/10/2021 18:37

I'm a Lauren and had one other Lauren in my year at school. There seem to be loads of Laurens in my profession which can be annoying, but I never seem to come across them anywhere else.

Slightly offended to be called downmarket 😂 as I'm sure are the Sharons, Karens and Darrens listed by PP!

MajorCarolDanvers · 12/10/2021 18:41

It was on my list but DH vetoed it.

I think its a lovely name.

Augusta1 · 12/10/2021 18:42

We have two in year 3 at my primary school.

Buttons294749 · 12/10/2021 20:32

I'm an 80s baby so know loads! Reminds me of lauren Conrad and very "cool girl" imo. I know a primary one

I like it

WaitinginVain · 12/10/2021 22:33

I agree OP, it is a really pretty name and don't know why it's not more popular. I don't know any of any age.
Don't actually get the love for Wren and find Laura really plain and a bit boring rather than classic. Lauren is nicer than Laurel imo.

Thedogscollar · 13/10/2021 02:48

@KirstenBlest

I think is sounds like Karen, Darren, Sharon etc I wouldn't say it was a 'stripper name' but it seems a bit downmarket
Don't be such a snob
Mediumred · 13/10/2021 02:52

It’s a lovely and evocative name, I know a 10-year-old Lauren, she’s great. I also know a grown up Laurel, also a beautiful name and woman.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 13/10/2021 02:59

Laurel Hubbard has ruined Laurel.

KirstenBlest · 13/10/2021 07:20

@Thedogscollar, I'm not being particularly snobbish. Strangely enough, I googled and the first Lauren that came up was a glamour model

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 13/10/2021 07:40

Be snobbish - claim it!! Who cares if someone thinks you’re a snob?

KirstenBlest · 13/10/2021 08:34

Names give an indication of the parents' socio-economic background.
They also can give an indication of someone's age.

The names threads are often critical of names that might be 'too posh' or 'too granny and not in a good way', or 'too middle aged'

Classica · 13/10/2021 11:33

@Scoutingformygirls

It's just lacking the timelessness of Laura and the quirkiness of Wren.

I'm really not keen on it tbh.

Trouble with 'quirky' names like Wren is that they date quite quickly. People probably thought Dawn was quirky back in the day.

I think Lauren is a pretty name but it's been very popular pretty recently so just feels a bit tired at the mo. I don't find it downmarket.

Utterlyexhausted · 13/10/2021 17:37

Lauren is definitely not down market. I always think of Ralph Lauren. I love it!

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 13/10/2021 17:38

I work in education and its still pretty common, even among younger kids.

Wow this place is bitchy….. harsh comments

RosyTea · 14/10/2021 15:53

Not a massive fan of Lauren but Laura is a really pretty name. Very popular 30 years ago but now would be quite unusual for a baby.

Classica · 14/10/2021 16:00

These days Laura is far more popular than Lauren so wouldn't be that unusual

KittenKong · 14/10/2021 16:02

I think it’s still popular in the states (well I work with a few twenty-something Lauren’s).

Bumblebee1223 · 14/10/2021 16:03

All the Lauren’s I knew at school (I’m
30) were mean girls!

LavenderYellow · 14/10/2021 16:04

I really like it!

Bearslovinghoney · 14/10/2021 16:06

I think if you describe a child’s name as downmarket you are probably downmarket yourself.

storkstalk · 14/10/2021 16:08

Agree that the Lauren’s I’ve met have never been particularly pleasant so that has probably sullied it for me. I also don’t think it’s as timeless and classic as Laura.
