Impossible surname

Our surname is Coe.
We’re having a boy in a few weeks and I can’t find a single name I like at all. Everything sounds like a company name!

Nothing with an O sound seems to work. Nor does anything ending in a C or K. Most boys’ names are one syllable and sound ridiculous.

I can see why Sebastian Coe’s mum went for that! It actually sounds alright. It would be on my list if it weren’t for him being well known.

Please help!

DH likes Edward and Isaac but I don’t love either and don’t think Isaac works at all.

I like Theo, Luke and Gabriel but DH doesn’t like them or they don’t work.

I think Gabriel works!

ShuddaBeenMe · 04/10/2021 18:28

Dominic?

TerribleCustomerCervix · 04/10/2021 18:29

I think longer is the way to go-

Alexander
Christopher
Laurence (Laurie)
Rafferty
Benjamin

I was going to include William but you couldn’t risk the chance of a Will Coe!

Firstbornunicorn · 04/10/2021 18:30

Gabe Coe is nice!

wheresmyshoe · 04/10/2021 18:30

Alexander
Henry
George

Alfie Coe

Pumpkinstace · 04/10/2021 18:31

Alexander
Dominic
Rupert
Harrison

I think it needs to be a longer name

Hungry675tf · 04/10/2021 18:31

Oooh that is a challenge! Sebastian totally works 🤔 I think Edward does too.

Frederick/Freddie
Arthur/Archie
Louis
Alexander/Alex/Xander

Andrewthecharminbumwiper · 04/10/2021 18:32

Gabriel, Edward are fab,I think anything ending in a C or K or O maybe not so much but it isn't prohibitive, just doesn't flow as well. I thi k you're very focussed on this understandably but if you met an Isaac or Django Coe, wouldn't give his name a second thought! How about writing a list of names you like, regardless of surname, having some space from this, and coming back to it in a week to see which you like best? I promise none of them.sound bad at all

Babyfg · 04/10/2021 18:33

I think Luke coe sounds really nice.

CouldWeStartAgainPlease · 04/10/2021 18:34

I don't think anything ending in a c or k works very well

Dominic Coe sounds a bit like Dominico
Isaac Coe sounds a bit like Isaaco
Etc

YukoandHiro · 04/10/2021 18:34

Agree that Benjamin is nice and with the surname less chance of it being shortened to Ben.

What about s-ending names, so it's a soft sound before the hard C? Silas, Rufus, Mathias, Elias, Charles, James, Nicholas, Lucas, Miles, Thomas, Tobias.

Bombaloorina · 04/10/2021 18:35

I think you’re over-thinking it.

Benjamin - off the the top of my head - sounds completely normal with it.

Even Edward is fine with it.

BurningBenches · 04/10/2021 18:38

Henry
Stephen
Cameron
Callum
Ryan
Samuel
Daniel
David
Joshua

SkinnyMirror · 04/10/2021 18:40

Gabriel
Alexander
Thomas
Samuel

GobbledyGeek · 04/10/2021 18:40

Nathaniel Coe
Benedict Coe
Jonathan Coe
Alistair Coe

CoddledAsAMommet · 04/10/2021 18:40

You definitely can't have Harrison, it'll be shortened to Harry and that would be hilarious!
These may work:
Adam
James
Robert
Dylan
Tristan
Alexander
George

Oscar Coe sounds weird and Alfie Coe is too close to Alfie Boe. Isaac Coe doesn't work at all. And certainly not Will!

SpindleWhirl · 04/10/2021 18:40

Robert Coe is great!

SpottyStripyDuvet · 04/10/2021 18:41

There is an author called Jonathan Coe. Like Sebastian's parents it seems that longer is better.

Benjamin is an excellent name Wink. Nicholas and Alexander also sound good.

Barwell76 · 04/10/2021 18:41

I agree it is a tricky. A name like Thomas qould be good but is usually shortened to Tom, which with Coe sounds like Tomko. Also William to Wilko.

I agree that Henry, Archie, Lucas, James work well.
George
Adam

flashpaper · 04/10/2021 18:44

Benjamin Coe
Nathaniel Coe
Franklin Coe
Oliver Coe
Nicholas Coe

DaisyWaldron · 04/10/2021 18:44

Gabriel works, as do most other names with a similar rhythm.
Lucian
William
Benjamin
Alistair
Abraham
Gregory
Harrison
Jonathan

Also Harry, Quentin, Nathaniel.

CoddledAsAMommet · 04/10/2021 18:44

In fact, the pp whosput the names ending in 's" has the right idea, those all sound great. (Apart from Nicholas which would be Nick Coe / Nicko)
Miles, James and Rufus are really good.

HandforthParishCouncilClerk · 04/10/2021 18:45

Albert? Bertie Coe sounds great!
Harvey?
Wilfred?
Stephen/Stefan?
