Hi, I was just wondering about the name Nova for a girl?

OP posts:

As with any baby name that isn't the norm, you might have to justify your reasons. Someone older might make a car reference lol.

aimss4777 · 30/09/2021 03:17

No just no

MorriseysGladioli · 30/09/2021 03:19

Ooh, I really like it, and I'm not usually keen on the more unusual names.
I really like it!

virginpinkmartini · 30/09/2021 03:19

I forgot to add my opinion- it's lovely. But consider the last name too.

virginpinkmartini · 30/09/2021 03:21

For example, Nova Smith would be a bit... meh. But Nova Jones would have more of a ring to it.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 30/09/2021 04:02

When I hear Nova I think of the character from American Pie who said on a date 'My friends call me Nova, as in Casanova'.

Like others have said, if you choose an unusual name you are much more likely to hear negative comments or get raised eyebrows, so long as you are prepared for that and won't get defensive then call your child what you want.

Nova is no Stormy-Cloud at least 😂

SarahBellam · 30/09/2021 04:25

Vauxhall Nova.

Balonzette · 30/09/2021 04:47

I used to like it, but I think it's one of those names that is only nice when very rare and not at all trendy, and I think it's getting quite trendy so might seem a bit naff soon.

Deathling · 30/09/2021 05:02

Please don't. It was an ok name for a car (Chevy) but not a little girl. (Neither is Paris, Ireland, Apple, or Manchester...)

ramonaquimby · 30/09/2021 06:53

Nova Scotia……
It’s a great dogs name if you’re from NS

pureofmind · 30/09/2021 06:56

Love it
Your baby your choice
I love nova lee or nova rose x

beccahamlet · 30/09/2021 07:00

It's a no from me I'm afraid. But it's not my baby. If you like it go for it.

ChimChimeny · 30/09/2021 07:02

surely it reminds people.of a certain age of the Vauxhall Nova Shock

I heard it on an American tv show recently & that was my first thought

AuntieStella · 30/09/2021 07:29

It was a very week, known car, that Association will,be around for a while.

It means 'doesn't go/doesn't work' in Spanish, which might not be great in diverse areas.

IME - it's one of the names like Luna, which people give to their dogs because it could be hard for a person to live with. There are several young canine Novas round here

Hugsgalore · 30/09/2021 07:29

A definite no from me. Sorry

StrictlyProfessional · 30/09/2021 07:42

I like it, one of the teen mom couples have a girl called nova - lee and she's a cutie pie so that's what I think of when I hear the name

There are that many strange and different names out there now that nova is pretty tame

HumunaHey · 30/09/2021 08:26

Ditto!
tootootaataa · 30/09/2021 08:37

Only if drinking champagne...

toastofthetown · 30/09/2021 09:13

It’s not an awful name. It’s super trendy though. It went from only 7 babies to top 200 in eight years.

CaptainCaveMum · 30/09/2021 09:30

Just No(va)

forestlovr · 30/09/2021 09:31

It's a lovely name!

Kindertonguehappierlife · 30/09/2021 09:33

Very old fashioned IMO I have lots of ancestors with that name either as a first or middle name

But I quite like it.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 30/09/2021 09:55

Nora yes, Nova no.

Neverwrestlewithapig · 30/09/2021 11:17

I met a girl at uni with the name who showed us all her fake ID with the surname Gina Grin she was quite cool. Now I wonder whether she had tried to embrace the joke before anyone could use it against her…? I didn’t know her well enough to know whether that it had ever been a problem for her but she certainly made fun of her name herself. At the time, I think it seemed an unusual name but not too weird. I think it’s fine but not one I’d choose for myself. We all like different things Smile

GinAllAfternoon · 30/09/2021 11:23

Every name has some sort of association to it unless you tumble scrabble letters out of a bag. There are characters in books, movies, biblical names, towns, cities, areas etc. Just choose what you like. I had a friend in the 70s called Nova even when the Vauxhaul Nova was a popular car.

It is a lovely name. I have sons with names that aren't on any key ring or mug. They are not unusual just not the top 50 names.
