Brilliant suggestions here!
Just wondering if anyone knows… Are any of the names Leila/ Lila/ Lilia Persian names or are they Arab names?

Leila is a Persian name from a classic Persian tale. The song Layla by Eric Clapton is based on the story. I love the name, it's an epic but I thought you were looking for something more unusual.
Are you naming a baby OP? Does the baby have Iranian or Afghan heritage?

shouldistop · 05/10/2021 08:18

I knew a Nilufar, known as Nilu, which is lovely.
Zohreh also beautiful.
I also like Noor and Shirin.

Winterwinter54 · 05/10/2021 12:58

@BananaBreakfast Yes I am, and we have heritage from both parts of the world, just throwing some ideas around at the moment to the rest of the family. I like the unusual names but none of them feel right so far. Roxana is nice in theory but when I say it, i don’t like it for some reason

I initially thought Leila had Arab origins. I’m just double checking because I want a traditional Persian origin name.

Mona (wish)
Rania (queen)
Dua (prayer)
Farah (happiness)
Best to last Rumi after the poet, a name used for boys and girls

Winterwinter54 · 05/10/2021 13:30

@bohomoon Thanks for these! Quite like Mona.

If you like Mona you might like Monir, Mitra or Minou.

Other names off the top of my head:
Baharak
Parvaneh

Something more unique: Daryanaz, which could be anglicised to Daria if needed!

Notgotanyidea · 05/10/2021 16:52

Sara
Mitra
Azar

My DD’s Persian friend is called Katayun

turkishteeth · 05/10/2021 19:40

I went to school with a Persian Firyal 40 years ago and still haven’t forgotten the name. She pronounced it Fairy Elle.

BiscuitLover09876 · 05/10/2021 20:40

@carbuncleonapigsposterior

My neighbour is Haleh, although when she was still at school everyone called her Holly. I'm glad when she became an adult she reverted back to her proper name, I think it's nice.
How do you pronounce this?
CaribouCarafe · 05/10/2021 21:39

It's hard to transliterate in English but it's a bit like holl-leh (with the h pronounced softly at the end).

This video includes the pronunciation: www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=9&v=xX3I8oF9kNc&feature=emb_logo
