My partner and I haven't found out the sex of the baby but he or she is due in a few weeks and we are still stuck with baby names... we don't really like the typical UK names but don't want something too out there that he/she will be bullied over.

Send me your suggestions!

Can't think of any boys names this morning.

A tricky challenge. When you say not 'traditional' do you mean that classic royal vibe?

How about Irish names known in the UK.

Finn Darling

Maeve Darling

I know you said you don't like classic names but Dominic Darling and Leo Darling are what I would consider European / Catholic classics. Do you like those? And for girl equivalents, Mary Darling sounds lovely. Marianne Darling, Enya/ Anya Darling

Maggie Darling has a ring to it. I think Darling softens up a potentially 'solid' unfrilly name. Lois Darling eg

Olwen Darling sounds good but I think that something like Lucinda Darling could sound like nearly a joke posh name.

Clio Darling
Greta Darling just popped in to my head.

For boys I think Howie with Darling makes it less ''tip toed'' somehow, and to ''man up'' Grin darling I like it paired with Victor.

Howie Darling
Victor Darling
Marius Darling

OP, with a surname like "Darling" you really need something that is not too "out there" and definitely not anything that functions as a noun. Leaf Darling, Love Darling.... really? These sound pretty silly. And the Darling River is a well known Australian river, you absolutely cannot use "River."

To be honest, I'd consider using the surname "Rivers" in this case. If I was really set on the surname "Darling," I'd go for something fairly classic like Eleanor or James or something like that.

Rather rude, suppose with asking on mumsnet I should have specified positive replies to avoid those like you.

A bit confused as to why many people seem so against using the name of an Australian river? Am I missing something...?

I think it's a great surname. Don't change it ! I do love the names Eleanor and James though. Elizabeth Darling is beautiful too.
Can I throw Valentine back in the ring??!!!

If you want to avoid more teasing:
Don’t use V as the initials will be VD.
O Darling is not good as others have said.

ILoveShula · 29/09/2021 10:28

Use whatever name you like, nothing too overused or too out there.

I wouldn't use a noun (e.g. Leaf, Willow - he or she will get It's a leaf, darling jokes) or something that would make a phrase (e,g. Ophelia - I feel you, darling)

I would't use something twee or cutesy.

Happenchance · 29/09/2021 10:35

I don't think that @user1477391263 was being rude. You specifically said in your OP that you don't want something too out there that he/she will be bullied over. @user1477391263 was pointing out that your suggestions don't meet that criteria.

One thing to consider, if you use a noun for a first name there's a risk that people will naturally say the full name with an inclination at the end, like a question. That could become annoying.

Thanks all for your input! A lot of thoughts here, I guess I was lucky at school and with those that surrounded me and would never have thought of many of them...

On this thread I love Clover, Liberty, Valentine and Roman Darling.

I hope you have multiple children and get to use all 4 names!
