Expecting DD2 in Feb.
Had DD1 been a twin, her sister would have been Caitlin, but I may have gone off it a bit. I've 2 issues: first, do people with this name have difficulties with others knowing how to spell and pronounce it properly? I don't want DD2 to have a lifetime of having to spell and correct the pronunciation of her name. Secondly, is it abbreviated to Cait/Kate? I don't want Cait (however spelt) to be used - it's too common and boring.
Love Caitlin, but only as a full name.

It instantly made me think of Caitlyn jenner

Really not keen on the name, sorry!

GemmaRuby · 17/09/2021 11:55

How do you want it to be pronounced?

TheCheeseBadge · 17/09/2021 11:57

I'm related to a Caitlin. She's 20, and has always used her full name, it's never shortened. Also sometimes people ask how to spell it, but not as often as some other names, and once they know, they get it right from then on.

PumpkinKlNG · 17/09/2021 11:57

I thought of caitlyn Jenner as well. I don’t really like the name.

LongDissidence · 17/09/2021 11:58

LOVE Caitlin. But I also like Cait/ Caty, so the shortenings would bother me so much.

It was on my shortlist, but it got eliminated because of the lin part making me think of Lynne Scully...! I didn't want to run the risk of her going with Lin in later life!

LongDissidence · 17/09/2021 11:59

*Lyn Scully. (Sorry Lyn)

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 17/09/2021 12:01

Reminds me of a book that had a "Caitlin Happymeal" in it. I think it is very pretty, but suspect at some point in her life people/she may shorten to Kate.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 17/09/2021 12:03

Obviously I mean pretty without the Happymeal part, not suggesting as a middle name!

Ilikecheeseontoast · 17/09/2021 12:05

I know a katelyn if you wanted it abbreviated to Kate

fger7 · 17/09/2021 12:05

I like it when it is pronounced as 'Kate-lyn'.

Not keen on the Caitlin Moran pronunciation of 'Cat-lyn' - although that may be the correct way, and indeed her right to decide.

coffy11 · 17/09/2021 12:06

Our 20 yo daughter is Caitlin. We call her Caity for short. I have no idea if she has issue with the spelling, she's never mentioned anything.

MindyStClaire · 17/09/2021 12:07

I know the battle has been lost on this, but I'm Irish and so don't like the anglicised pronunciations. I only like it as cotch-leen or coytch-leen, with appropriate fadas.

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 17/09/2021 12:08

I’m Irish so wouldn’t know if it was pronounced Cat-leen (which I consider the correct version!) or Katelyn (like Jenner) or even Cat-lin like Moran!

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 17/09/2021 12:08

X-post with Mindy!

lightand · 17/09/2021 12:08

Have to say, that is I would say 1 out of about 5 names that makes me wince. I dont really know why. But I am of the older generation. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

IAmWomxxnHearMeRoar · 17/09/2021 12:09

I would want it pronounced Kate-lyn. I'm no Catelyn Jenner fan but tbh if it means people know how to say my DDs name, I'm fine with the limited connection!

Caitlin Moran has apparently said she saw the name as a teen and just thought it was pronounced Cat-lyn and it's stuck. It is Irish and originally would have been pronounced a bit like Cat-Leen, but I want it pronounced in what I see as the "normal" English way which is basically Kate-Lyn.

Lovely name and much more popular and ‘loaded’ in US and Australia. As pp have said there are 2 pronunciation Cat~ and Cate~ And squillions of spellings.

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 17/09/2021 12:10

Also agree with your pronunciations Mindy just wasn’t sure how to write them down. It’s not quite ‘Cotch’ in my mind maybe more somewhere between Catch and Cotch!

APerfectSky · 17/09/2021 12:11

@MindyStClaire

I know the battle has been lost on this, but I'm Irish and so don't like the anglicised pronunciations. I only like it as cotch-leen or coytch-leen, with appropriate fadas.
How are cotch-leen and coytch-leen pronounced in Ireland? Is it the same as Caitlin? (Just curious!)

OP, I know a Kaitlyn and I don't believe she's ever been a Kate. I prefer the C spelling personally though, but it's a pretty name.

Dizzy1234 · 17/09/2021 12:13

Ooh I know someone called caitlin, pronounced Kate-Lynn, I love that name, probably because I love her, she started at my firm as a 16yr apprentice engineer in a male dominated industry and was the spunkiest, funniest, kindest girl I've ever met.
We never shortened her name, my vote is to name your DD caitlin 😁

APerfectSky · 17/09/2021 12:13

Crikey, it obviously takes me a long time to type, lots of x posts on spelling!

campion · 17/09/2021 12:14

@fger7

I like it when it is pronounced as 'Kate-lyn'.

Not keen on the Caitlin Moran pronunciation of 'Cat-lyn' - although that may be the correct way, and indeed her right to decide.

She says she chose that name out of a book but didn't know how to pronounce it. Given that her name was Catherine, that probably explains it.

I think she's the only one - unless people are now copying her.

Lindy2 · 17/09/2021 12:18

I've always liked Caitlin as a name.

I might have used it as a name for one of my DDs but it's a bit close to my own name and didn't go with our surname very well.

I know several of varying ages. All are pronounced Kate Lynn and none ever seem to be shortened.

IAmWomxxnHearMeRoar · 17/09/2021 12:18

Do totally get why the Anglicised pronunciation would irk anyone with Irish heritage. I'm Welsh and it drives me up the wall when people pronounce the beautiful Welsh name Sian as Sci-Ann!
I do think though that Caitlin is now Kate-Lyn within the English world and that battle has probably been lost. Just really wanted to know if Caitlin's have difficulties with people spelling and pronouncing their name (as Kate-Lyn), and if it's likely to be shortened to Cait/y.

TidyDancer · 17/09/2021 12:19

I love the name but it's been ruined for me by the Jenner connection.
