Thoughts on the name Prairie

What do you guys think of the name Prairie for a boy, my husband wanted to honor his Dad, Perry, if it’s a boy, but I feel like it’s a little dated, I think Prairie sounds kind of cute & more modern….Do you guys prefer the name Perry or Prairie?

It’s not different really to using Savannah.

I’m not sure I’ll ever be inspired to call a child after a geographic habitat, but if Savannah can be a name, I don’t see why Prairie shouldn’t be. Or Tundra. Or Permafrost!

My mother attempted to name me "Prairie Dawn", she thought it was absolutely beautiful. Thank goodness my dad stepped in and said absolutely not, the other children will call her Prairie Dog!

I do NOT recommend this name, I am eternally grateful that I was saved from being Prairie Dawn.

It is different than using Savannah, as the origin of the name Savannah is not to with the African grasslands. It is a city in the USA—more akin to naming a child London or Paris. Savannah is the name of the river that goes through the city of Savannah, which is a take on what the Native Americans named the river.

Why don't you just pick a name you like & use Perry as his middle name?

Perry is absolutely fine as a middle name. It's lovely to have a family name. Prairie bears no relation to Perry , isn't a particularly nice word and is a bit silly as a name. If you can't stomach Perry you could try Falcon hides head but still as a middle name ( assuming DPil was Peregrine and not named for Pericles or a coder made from pears) .

Prairie is a strong contender for worst suggestion I’ve heard on this website sorry OP!
Perry is ok but I’d use it as a middle name. It does make me think of Perry the platypus (from a Disney cartoon) and Kevin & Perry.

Ah op I really thought this was a joke (we get a lot of jokey name threads). I feel a bit bad making fun of it if you were actually serious...but honestly, no, you can’t name the baby Prairie. Perry is absolutely fine as a middle name.

I think official baby naming should happen when the babies turn 1. Pregnancy and post pregnancy aren’t the most rational of times to make a forever decision.

If you want something similar to Perry but not then what about the Welsh name Parry? At least it's resembles the name you want to honour! Personally I'd just stick Perry in as a middle name though, it's fine for that.

I like it as a girl's name but I think Perry is much better for a boy.

I think I prefer Grassland.

How about your child honours their grandfather by having his surname?

Perry is better than Prairie imo. More likely to be called Peri Peri than the Harry Enfield character imo

I think Prairie is quite a nice name for a girl. Not a boy though .

If you want to honour your FIL then have Perry as a middle name and chose a normal first name .
