What do you guys think of the name Prairie for a boy, my husband wanted to honor his Dad, Perry, if it’s a boy, but I feel like it’s a little dated, I think Prairie sounds kind of cute & more modern….Do you guys prefer the name Perry or Prairie?

Peony or penny is similar

HerRoyalNotness · 14/09/2021 01:52

I really like it. But I’m in the US and you hear all sorts of names here. Comes across as ‘hipster’ to me (is that even a thing still?)

squee123 · 14/09/2021 02:02

I wouldn't call a boy something that rhymes with fairy. Asking for them to be bullied

IndecentCakes · 14/09/2021 02:08

Babycham

Ribblechips · 14/09/2021 02:12

It means meadow in French. Personally I wouldn't go for it, especially not for a boy.

Ribblechips · 14/09/2021 02:24

Perry is short for Peregrine presumably? I quite like it but it's quite a full on name!

wandawaves · 14/09/2021 02:26

LOL, no OP. No.

squee123 · 14/09/2021 07:54

Isn't Perry short for Percival?

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/09/2021 07:56

I've only heard of it as a girl's name, and then it was a middle name.

I really like Perry, I don't think it's dated at all. However, I'm very much of the 'give a child it's own name' camp so I'd only use as a middle name.

Doomscrolling · 14/09/2021 08:05

Prairie is a flaky hippy girl’s name. Although a very nice muppet on Sesame Street. Prairie dogs are ground squirrels, like an undersized groundhog or a beefed up gopher. Not an association I’d welcome.

Perry… generally a nickname for a more formal boy’s name like Peregrine or Percival. (Unless he’s a platypus super sleuth, obviously)

IAmWomxxnHearMeRoar · 14/09/2021 09:30

Do you mean Little House on the Prairie? Why not call him Laura?
Or a normal name - not Perry, use it as a middle name if you must, but your child has to have this name for life.

RuthW · 14/09/2021 12:18

I would expect a girl with that name

IrisLilyRose · 14/09/2021 12:23

I prefer Perry.

NLondondiva · 14/09/2021 12:39

How about Peregrine shortened to Pip?

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 14/09/2021 12:43

I know Savannah is a name but Prairie... NO

Billandben444 · 14/09/2021 12:46

Please don't use Prairie. Poor child.

IrisLilyRose · 14/09/2021 12:47

Savannah, Steppe, Veldt, Pampas..

Ninkanink · 14/09/2021 12:51

Oh god no.

I much prefer Perry (even though I don’t like the name all that much). Prairie is just utterly ridiculous. I really hope this is a joke.

MrsJemimaDuck · 14/09/2021 12:55

I’m American, where a huge portion of the middle of the country is actually the prairie, and encountering a person with this name would be particularly bizarre. In a way it does remind me of the girl’s name Savannah, which is popular in America. However, the child is not named after the African grasslands, they are named after the city in Georgia (whose name has a Native American root).

TheRabbitStoleMyHat · 14/09/2021 13:23

Why not just use Perry as a middle name.

maofteens · 14/09/2021 13:27

Prairie is awful, especially for a boy. If I met a girl with that name I'd think gosh what were her parents thinking? Double if it was a boy.
Perry at least is an actual name.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 14/09/2021 14:01

Prairie is lovely. For a girl.

Could you go with a ‘near’ name instead of Perry? Percy, Pierre, Pierce, Peter?

Anordinarymum · 14/09/2021 14:06

I actually thought this was a thread about dogs names

TrueGrit54 · 14/09/2021 14:10

It’s a no from me. I like proper names. Perry is fine, I would assume they were a Percival.

crystalspiders · 14/09/2021 14:14

Maybe as a middle name? Our eldest sons middle name is Bayou and I’m glad we used it as a middle name instead of a first name
