Francesca?

Help! I’m struggling with girls names. Luckily we still have plenty of time but wanted to get a few suggestions.

I have always wanted a fairly traditional name, not too common and a longer name that can be shortened. I’ve come to love the name Francesca on its own but am having a mental block around it suiting a baby. We would probably use Frankie as a nickname.

What do people think about Francesca and does anyone have any other suggestions?

As a side note, my DH likes the name but has got his heart set on Poppy. Whilst I think it’s a sweet name, I can’t get past the fact I know two people who have dogs called Poppy so have vetoed it!

I like Francesca, very popular in Italy and Greece (spelled in a slightly different manner). Poppy is very cute and girly, Francesca is more robust and mature.

Francesca is a fab name. She will only be a baby for a year or two, she'll be an adult for 70 plus years. Poppy is nice enough, but it does have a dog association for me. As an adult I would much prefer to be called Francesca than poppy.

heldinadream · 03/09/2021 16:14

Love Francesca/Frankie. Suits baby/child/adult.
Agree with you about Poppy. Cute but too many dogs called it.

NotAnotherBloodyNameChange · 03/09/2021 16:15

I have a little DN called Francesca -Fran- and she is adorable so I automatically like the name.
They have a dog called poppy!

GreyhoundG1rl · 03/09/2021 16:15

I prefer Poppy, tbh. Francesca is a bit too flowery.

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 03/09/2021 16:17

Biased as we would have called DS1 this if he had been a girl, but I think it’s lovely.

Ironic 😂

I love Francesca, I think it’s lovely. Could be shortened to Fran, Frankie, Chesca (not sure how best to spell that!) or Chessie I suppose, so worth thinking about whether you like the shortened versions!

I prefer Francesca to poppy, also just because I know dogs called poppy

daisypond · 03/09/2021 16:19

Francesca is lovely. It’s a stronger name than Poppy. I’m not so keen on Frankie, though.

The irony of this Hmm
RickOShay · 03/09/2021 16:19

The Francesca I know is Cheka.

DaffyDaffy · 03/09/2021 16:19

I love Francesca!! So many good nicknames as well, Frankie, Fran, Chessie...

HoldingTheDoor · 03/09/2021 16:23

I'm not a fan though it's ok but Frankie is utterly hideous.

IWasBornInAThunderstorm · 03/09/2021 16:25

I struggle to say Francesca and don't like Fran and Frankie.

I don't like Poppy either but like you know people who have called their pets it.

toastofthetown · 03/09/2021 16:28

The dog name doesn’t put me off. Most people I know with pets now seem to be moving away from names like Alfie and Poppy in favour of names like Nigel and David - but that might be anecdotal. Still I wouldn’t base a decision on that.

Francesca is a good solid name. I’m less keen on Frankie, I prefer Fran, but your daughter will choose the nickname she likes the most.

emsie12345 · 03/09/2021 16:37

My daughter is called Francesca-May. She's named sort of after my Grandparents, Frank and May. She gets Frankie, Cheska or Cheskie. She's starting school next week and has said she'd like everyone to call her Francesca. So that's that then 😂

Aquarius93 · 03/09/2021 16:45

Glad to get so many opinions.

I do like that there are plenty of options for nicknames so she can choose what she prefers!

Both names are great!

bobbeebob · 03/09/2021 17:38

Good name! Classy

Fran is nicer than Frankie, imo

Or Cheska!

bobbeebob · 03/09/2021 17:39

@FiveGensOfLove 😂

Beautiful name! I have a Frances and her nn is Frankie, great for a baby and a teen. (She's 14)

cheeseisnice · 04/09/2021 00:20

I have a Francesca. She's 10 now and insists on being called Frankie. We've only ever had positive comments about her name, although a couple of kids at school through the years have told her Frankie is a boys name.
I love Frankie. It's ballsy in my mind. But you can't go wrong with Francesca. x

PumpkinKlNG · 04/09/2021 00:33

Like it but hate franny

Lavender1974 · 04/09/2021 00:37

I have a Francesca and she is mostly called Francie (pronounced Fransi). A softer version of Frankie (which I also like too!).

Pallisers · 04/09/2021 00:42

Francesca is wonderful. I know one who is about 21 - lovely, charming, just about to graduate from NYU acting school.

Poppy is cute but that is my problem with it.
