Francesca?

Help! I’m struggling with girls names. Luckily we still have plenty of time but wanted to get a few suggestions.

I have always wanted a fairly traditional name, not too common and a longer name that can be shortened. I’ve come to love the name Francesca on its own but am having a mental block around it suiting a baby. We would probably use Frankie as a nickname.

What do people think about Francesca and does anyone have any other suggestions?

As a side note, my DH likes the name but has got his heart set on Poppy. Whilst I think it’s a sweet name, I can’t get past the fact I know two people who have dogs called Poppy so have vetoed it!

I really don't like Francesca but I detest Frankie.

As for Poppy, it's so cutesy it makes my teeth itch. Sorry.

ZednotZee · 04/09/2021 00:48

I like Francesca, completely different vibe than Poppy.
Have to say that none of the diminutive are a patch on the full name though.

Would you consider Alessandra?

SilverConvention · 04/09/2021 02:35

I absolutely love it. And Frankie. Fran, no.

NellyDElephant · 04/09/2021 02:38

Love it. My third baby was going to be Francesca, and after having had two girls already and I was certain it would be another girl and baby Francesca named as such. DS - Fraser - is now 7!

I work with a Francesca....most people at work call her Fran....I call her Francesca... I really like it.
My friend has a grandchild called Francesca.... she is always called Cesca ( pronounced Chesker)

Explosivefarts · 04/09/2021 03:23

I wouldn’t my friend has this name she was called Franny by everyone and we all know what rhymes with that .

Butterfly3005 · 04/09/2021 03:34

I like it.

My cousin is called Francesca and we always call her Chez.

@GreyhoundG1rl

I prefer Poppy, tbh. Francesca is a bit too flowery.
Poppy is slightly more flowery I would say... Hmm
Standrewsschool · 04/09/2021 06:25

Francesca is lovely, classic, strong name.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 04/09/2021 06:46

I like Francesca. I have a Frances who I tried to call Frankie. That was unacceptable apparently.

I love francesca, it's such a strong and beautiful name. Poppy is just a bit too cutsie for me.

Vaselike · 04/09/2021 07:01

I love Francesca, knew one who was called Cecky (like Becky).

RubertRoo · 04/09/2021 07:03

I absolutely love Francesca. I really wanted it for DD but there was suddenly an influx of lots of people in my town calling their baby daughters just Frankie. As Frankie is the inevitable nickname - it put me off the name. But it is beautiful

PearlyRising · 04/09/2021 07:05

Going against the grain here but it's a bit harsh. So many nicer Italian names that would work. Such as Giulia or Paola

cheesemarmitepanini · 04/09/2021 07:18

@Vaselike

I love Francesca, knew one who was called Cecky (like Becky).
Cecky? Not Checky?

Cecky?

GreyhoundG1rl · 04/09/2021 10:06

Cecky? Not Checky?
Either one is Godawful.

xprincessxjanetx · 04/09/2021 11:13

I love both names. How about Francesca Poppy Surname?

Incidentally, Frankie is my favourite NN of Francesca. I do not like Franny and Fran though.
