Ellis?

I really like the name Ellis, however since I've been pregnant I have come across 3 new babies with this name. Is it really trendy and likely to date? How many Ellis' do you know?
I really don't want anything too popular or trendy, so that is the only thing putting me off, and I'm leaning more towards Owen for this reason.

i only know of (and that's a "know of" not a "know") one and he's about 14-15 now.

MaverickDanger · 24/08/2021 12:55

I know two born weeks apart in the same time.

Both have Welsh connections

MaverickDanger · 24/08/2021 12:56

Supposed to be same town*

They are both under 1.

DotDotDotDotDot · 24/08/2021 14:14

I haven’t met any baby Owen’s or Ellis’ in the past few years so neither seem popular where I live. The dark greener website is really useful for understanding name trends. I like both names actually but I’d probably sway towards Owen as Ellis is more of a unisex name in the US particularly, whereas Owen seems definitely male name to me. This obviously may not bother you of course but just thought I’d mention it. Good luck.

Wowcherarestalkingme · 24/08/2021 14:16

It's my son's middle name but I don't know any other little Ellis'

Givemethatknife · 24/08/2021 14:24

A bit I think. Have heard it as a girls’ name recently.

AperolWhore · 24/08/2021 14:25

My friends daughter is called Ellis and I’m gutted she found that name first tbh im desperate for another baby and I’d have loved that for my next haha

UpInTheAttic · 24/08/2021 14:25

I know one 5-year-old Ellis. Gorgeous name which was on my list too.

PaolaDiLorenzo · 24/08/2021 14:26

I went to school with one,he was really annoying and would be about fifty now.
I know of a younger one who is seven.
I think it's a nice name and suits all ages.

bloominglovelyorange · 24/08/2021 15:13

I don't know any Ellis' and have never heard of anyone with a baby of this name either (and I listen out for it as it's my favourite boy name)

Have a look at the graph of the official statistics if you want to check the popularity. Growth is completely flat for the name Ellis, no upsurge in popularity happening , I'd use it for sure

Owen is nice but quite similar sounding to Rowan (which is a name that is becoming too trendy and overused).

Suziebee86 · 24/08/2021 15:36

@bloominglovelyorange thats really helpful thank you. Although it doesn't go past 2019.
I'd be interested to know more recent numbers. Does anyone know when they get published?

For me Ellis sounds like a surname. I've only ever known people have it as their last name, and so I'm not keen on it as a first name for that reason.

Popsicales · 24/08/2021 16:28

I have an Ellis. He’s 4. In the 2 schools I’ve taught at, I’ve only met one other Ellis who would be 9/10 now. There are no others at his nursery. I love it Smile

Wonmoretime · 24/08/2021 16:59

I know of one teenage Ellis, and an Owen who’s 11, and a toddler Owen. All are boys and all have Welsh backgrounds .

AuntieStella · 24/08/2021 17:02

I know one boy (must be about 7 now) and one other boy (in his 20s now!) who has it as a middle name.

I really like it as a boys name

AuntieStella · 24/08/2021 17:05

Should be any time now - I've not seen any notice of publication date, but it's uaually late August

(I assume it's because they do the compilation work during parliament's long summer recess, when other deadlines are not falling due, but perhaps that's just my imagination!)

CaffiSaliMali · 24/08/2021 17:32

Name stats are usually published in late August/September so they should be out soon.

I know two people named Ellis - a woman in her 20s and a 17 year old boy. Both English, with no Welsh connections. In Welsh Elis only has one L - like with Elis James, the comedian.

I've never met an Owen but I have lots in my family tree on my Welsh side.

I like both names but would probably go with Owen as it's less unisex than Ellis.

CallieTorres · 24/08/2021 17:36

Greys Anatomy had Ellis Grey *mother of Meredith
And Ellis Shepherd is the younger daughter of Meredith and Derek

Suziebee86 · 24/08/2021 17:37

@AuntieStella perfect thank you!

Maybe it isn't as popular as I thought. I know it's quite a common surname, as Is Owen, but this doesn't bother me at all.

@Popsicales does your Ellis ever get called anything else in the way of a nn? My mum put me off slightly when she said that people may call him Ellie Confused

daisypond · 24/08/2021 17:52

I know one about age one.

dontcallmelen · 24/08/2021 17:58

My niece is Ellis she is in her thirties, have never met another.

golddustwomen · 24/08/2021 18:01

I have an Ellis. He's the only one I know, throughout nursery he's been the only Ellis there too. I really do bloody love his name!!! We've never shortened it, it's either Ellis or Ellis the menace Grin

RuthW · 24/08/2021 18:11

I went to school with a boy Ellis who would be 53 now.

The only other Ellis I've ever come across was the daughter of one of my friends. She would be about 32 now.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/08/2021 18:14

I know two Ellises, both boys. One is about 14, the other is 9.

I much prefer the name Owen but if you like Ellis then go for it.

Thisnamewasnttaken123 · 24/08/2021 18:15

I dont know any.
It's a lovely name.
