Ellis?

I really like the name Ellis, however since I've been pregnant I have come across 3 new babies with this name. Is it really trendy and likely to date? How many Ellis' do you know?
I really don't want anything too popular or trendy, so that is the only thing putting me off, and I'm leaning more towards Owen for this reason.

I know one about around 7. I wouldn’t have thought it a unisex name. Also know one Owen about the same age.

poolblue · 24/08/2021 18:21

I know three:
Male age 87
Male age 26
Female age 14
Love the name

Froppysue · 24/08/2021 18:30

I know 3.. woman aged 75, girl aged 12 and a boy aged 3

I like the name Ellis - I don't know any. I think it's nicer than owen, though owen is also good. I really like Euan or Ioan.

FanGirlFoof · 24/08/2021 19:57

I have an American friend with an Ellis. Known as Eli.

FanGirlFoof · 24/08/2021 19:57

He's a little boy.

FanGirlFoof · 24/08/2021 19:59

Eli is pronounced Ee - lie. Not Ellie.

I think it's lovely.

Svenalma · 24/08/2021 20:08

Great name

cactijones · 24/08/2021 20:10

I know one boy whose about 10 and a girl in her 20s. It's a nice name

cactijones · 24/08/2021 20:11

I much prefer Ellis to Owen x

PlainJane1000 · 24/08/2021 20:27

I know a teenage male Ellis and a 9 year old female Ellis. I would worry now that because Ella has been so popular 'Ell...' names may sound more feminine than masculine.

TwigTheWonderKid · 24/08/2021 20:28

@golddustwomen

I have an Ellis. He's the only one I know, throughout nursery he's been the only Ellis there too. I really do bloody love his name!!! We've never shortened it, it's either Ellis or Ellis the menace Grin
I also have a 16 year old "Ellis the Menace", though apart from the fact he's a foot taller than me, he is a big softy and there is nothing menacing about him.

We used it as it's a family name. He was born in 2005 when it was almost at its peak of popularity but the only other male one we know is about 10 years older. I still think it's a relatively unusual name. That darkgreener site shows the number of babies named Ellis in 2019 represented 0.12% of all baby boys born that year. Can't imagine it's increased massively since then.

I was in school (Wales) with three boys called Ellis and one girl, although I vaguely recall hers being spelt differently. This was in the 90s.

Nowadays I just associate it with Grey's Anatomy.

Not sure that's true, or an issue?

My DS loves the fact his name is not stereotypically "masculine"

Donotgogentle · 24/08/2021 20:34

I have a 50-something Welsh male relative named Ellis/Elis.

I like the name.

carrietwick · 24/08/2021 20:42

I was going to call my son Ellis, the midwife who delivered him told me her best friend in America was called that and it’s known as a girls name over there, unfortunately that put me off and I now have an Owen. We’ve met a couple with that name so far but it’s not very common where I live.

HoldingTheDoor · 24/08/2021 22:44

Owen is much nicer.

golddustwomen · 25/08/2021 10:33

@TwigTheWonderKid my Ellis can be a little menace some days!

He's only 4 but he loves his name too Smile

Babydust13 · 25/08/2021 15:10

I think Owen is much nicer and I know 3 baby Ellis' but no baby Owen's

LooseyGoosey · 25/08/2021 15:13

My little boy is Ellis and he's nearly 1 now. I love the name and haven't met any others but it's not exactly unheard of.
