Margot, Violet or Dorothy?

Which would you go for? I’m slightly concerned about popularity of the first two. I like the nickname potential of Dorothy, although maybe both Dolly and Dotty are slightly silly? Will probably use one as a first and one as a middle name.

I like them all but would pick Violet out of those three. Have you thought about Pearl?

Mommybunny · 23/08/2021 20:47

Don’t personally know any children with those names, but I think Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have a Violet and Dick and Angel from Escape to the Chateau have a Dorothy?

Margot was the Penelope Keith character on The Good Life, no? (I’m not from round these parts so I didn’t grow up watching that show.)

Violet is the nicest name of the three but I had a batty great-aunt named Violet who talked and talked and talked nonsense with every breath.

Honestly, I don’t love any of them. Margot is the best, but I really prefer the spelling Margeaux.

Dozer · 23/08/2021 20:52

Violet.

Prefer Margaret to Margot, and the former has options for nicknames like Meg or Daisy.

Lulu1919 · 23/08/2021 20:56

Dorothy
Margot
Violet
Love them all but I'd go in that order !

Belli668 · 23/08/2021 21:02

Violet - I love this
Margot - I like this
Dorothy - I wouldn’t use

To me, Dorothy is still very much an ‘old lady’ name - I think it’s because I’ve known lots of old Dorothys and one old Dot. I can’t see it on a little girl (although lots of people do like it so maybe I’m in the minority!)

GoodnightGrandma · 23/08/2021 21:02

Margot.

Pemba · 23/08/2021 21:40

If you think about it, probably 20 years ago people would have been incredulous at someone calling their baby Florence, Ivy, Elsie or Arthur and now they're all over the place. My DD is in her twenties and when I named her I wouldn't have dreamed of giving her one of the old lady names that are so popular now. Dorothy doesn't seem an OAP name to me but actually Elsie and Arthur still do (if I'm honest)

SE13Mummy · 23/08/2021 22:45

I'd pick Dorothy as I know of lots of little Margots and Violets at the moment. Dot, Dotty, Ottie, Dolly or even Dora could be used as nicknames.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/08/2021 22:55

They are all trendy retro/vintage yet a bit dowdy sounding to me, sorry. At a push I like Violet best (at least it's a pretty flower and she has a cute nn option in Letty) although I personally prefer the sound of Shakespearean, international Viola.

Notalotofinspiration · 23/08/2021 23:02

Dorothy is great

myheartskippedabeat · 23/08/2021 23:04

Margo or Violet
Dottie not Dorothy

JuneMomof4 · 24/08/2021 00:42

Margot is a lovely name, very classic and timeless.

OneAugustNight · 24/08/2021 07:44

I don’t like any of them at all sorry but if I had to pick one it would be Violet.

MissBPotter · 24/08/2021 10:25

Thank you for all your perspectives! Interesting to see them. I still don’t know what to go with but maybe Violet Margot or Dorothy Violet. DH would probably say Margot though. Guess we will have to decide when she arrives, which hopefully won’t be too long Smile

I like them all - but would go with Dorothy (or better Dorothea) as other two v pop.

Love Dorey and Dot as nns

MumofSpud · 24/08/2021 14:32

Violet is lovely - used it for my DD's middle name but it is a shame that it is 'hidden' !!
I also love Vivienne

MuchTooTired · 24/08/2021 14:37

I’d pick Dorothy Violet. Smile

brushlaptop · 24/08/2021 14:40

Margot or Violet. Both beautiful!!!

MrsMcTats · 24/08/2021 18:05

My DS's friend is called Dorothy/Dottie/Dot and I think it's such a lovely name. Feminine but also strong. Works for young and old - there have been a few famous Dorothy's. Yes it's an 'old lady' name to us, but children born now won't think of it for that. Wish I'd called my DD it TBH!

ItsSunnyOutside · 24/08/2021 18:13

I am a fan of the older sounding names so Dorothy is lovely but I would call dd Dottie instead. I love that name.

I also like Margot but 4 of my friends/work mates have called their DDs that name. I think it is very popular at the moment. Nothing wrong with that obviously, but there will probably be a few Margots in the same class when DD starts school!

Violet is cute but is my least favourite.

danascully96 · 24/08/2021 21:16

Violet and Margot are the best! Dorothy with the nn Dot is sweet, but the other two are chicer.

LittleDoritt · 24/08/2021 22:01

Margot or Dorothy. I find Violet really insipid.

Tulips15 · 24/08/2021 22:06

I know an 8 year old Dorothy, she is known As Dot & Dotty.

I like Violet the best.

Margot reminds me of 'Maggot'

Chunkymenrock · 24/08/2021 22:09

I dislike them all. Violet is the least bad. Margot is truly frumpy and ugly sounding and looks like maggot. I am astonished by its popularity tbh.
