Alma?

Opinions on Alma?

I feel like it has slight old lady / Coronation Street vibes, a bit like Vera - but both seem like pretty names, objectively. I love the meaning of Alma - soul / nourishing.

Fits current trends, could be shortened to ‘Allie’ wouldn’t use it myself but I don’t dislike it.

tarheelbaby · 23/08/2021 11:00

FYI
alma is a Latin word also used in Spanish & Italian meaning nourishing, kind (you may know the phrase alma mater for one's former school)
The Battle of the Alma (River) was part of the Crimean War which the Russians lost to the French/English allies.
in Crimean Tatar alma = apple

Alma makes me think of St Clare's, the Alma from there. I've only ever met one, aged in her sixties.

peaceinourtime · 23/08/2021 15:26

Almes is a potential nickname I would say.

LunaDreams · 23/08/2021 17:27

Reminds me of Elma the elephant.

I personally prefer Alva or Alba

LunaDreams · 23/08/2021 17:29

BTW I appreciate the elephant is called Elmer. Just thinking about it phonetically

user1493494961 · 23/08/2021 17:38

Old lady, but not in a good way.

Lockdownbear · 23/08/2021 17:38

Alma, I have no real feelings about.

I personally prefer Alva or Alba
I definitely wouldn't call my child Alva, an village in Clackmannanshire or Alba, Scotland in Gaelic, many things are called Alba Inc a political party, BBC channel, and a skip company!

It might work in other countries but not in the UK.

Yes! Me too. St Clare's Alma wasn't nice.
MaMelon · 23/08/2021 17:41

It reminds me of Elmer Fudd or names like Euphemia and Winnifred - old fashioned and not due a revival any time soon.

Saucery · 23/08/2021 17:41
I would still use it.
Firebird83 · 23/08/2021 18:06

I think it’s definitely due a comeback. It’s lovely.

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 23/08/2021 18:31

I love it

To be fair, I have never heard of any of those things so guess it depends where you live!
bananananadakrie · 23/08/2021 19:16

Beautiful. I know one in their early teens, gorgeous name.

ActonSquirrel · 23/08/2021 19:17

Was a major character in the Handmaid's tale. But many won't make that connection. She was a handmaid in the new series.

RuthW · 23/08/2021 19:41

Not to my taste but a perfectly reasonable name

toastofthetown · 23/08/2021 19:43

Alma is lovely. It's actually rising in popularity at the moment, but still unusual. It wouldn't surprise me ion it continued to climb the charts.

DramaAlpaca · 23/08/2021 20:40

I'm not a fan, but it's better than Alba.

KatherineJaneway · 23/08/2021 20:42

I think Alma Cogan

Givemethatknife · 24/08/2021 14:22

I really don’t like it.

Adela?

Woolywolf · 24/08/2021 14:26

I prefer Alba, but Alma is better than Alva which sounds like vulva to me.
Althea and Embla or Amber are similar sounding

Balonzette · 24/08/2021 14:30

Gaining in popularity. Bit of a divide between those who think it's got a romantic and dreamy European vibe and others whose minds go directly to frumly middle aged British woman from the 70s with hair in curlers and fag in mouth. I'm in the former category. I know one baby Alma

Newnamefor2021 · 24/08/2021 14:37

I hate it but only because it's a main "character" in the Book of Mormon and I associate anyone called alma with Mormonism. I was raised Mormon and left the cult.

MargosKaftan · 24/08/2021 14:42

I know 2 Alma's, both in their late 60s, both fabulously strong and interesting woman.

But I like old lady names.
