Alma?

Opinions on Alma?

I feel like it has slight old lady / Coronation Street vibes, a bit like Vera - but both seem like pretty names, objectively. I love the meaning of Alma - soul / nourishing.

Alma means soul in Spanish. It's an old lady name here too. I quite like it though

I knew an Alma Ali which is a great name, she was from Pakistan so the name may have persian roots too.

I'm 38 weeks and planning on calling DD Alma (hopefully in the next few days!!). It's my nans middle name so has a family connection for us. It took me a little while to get DH to come around but he has now and loves it. I'm really hoping it doesn't sky rocket in popularity because I like that it's not overly popular. Although I have seen it popping up in more places recently!!

It's rather...heavy and the -ma sound isn't very pretty. It's inoffensive, however, so no real reason not to use it if you love it. I can imagine her being 30 or 40 or 50 and complaining about the name her mum gave her though 😂

@Newnamefor2021

I hate it but only because it's a main "character" in the Book of Mormon and I associate anyone called alma with Mormonism. I was raised Mormon and left the cult.
I am a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and wouldn’t think twice about a girl named Alma. While Alma is a church name, I still primarily know it as a fab female name in the UK and Europe. The Almas at church (male) are good guys anyway.

I really like it OP! It’s the perfect level of not cutesy but still suits a little girl, through to understated coolness in adulthood.

Dowdy.

Bethals86 · 27/08/2021 14:29

Love it! Although I’m biased as my 2 year old is called Alma, she fits the meaning of the name ‘nourishing soul’ she doesn’t stop smiling and is such a kind and caring little girl,
I think you will get haters and lovers of the name, as long as you’re happy with it!
:)

OneAugustNight · 27/08/2021 14:31

Don’t like it at all.

SardineJam · 27/08/2021 14:32

I like it, sounds quite pretty

olderthanyouthink · 27/08/2021 14:36

I don't hate it.

There's a Louis Vuitton handbag called Alma and it's kinda an old lady bag but I liked it

ofwarren · 27/08/2021 14:43

It used to remind me of Alma from coronation Street but since the handmaid's tale, I think of that Alma instead.
I don't hate it but don't love it either. It's inoffensive.

AliceMcK · 27/08/2021 14:48

On the fence with Alma, I don’t hate it but I’m not certain I love it either. I think it’s a name I’d warm to. But ultimately I think it would have to fall in the middle name category for me personally. I do love Vera but Vera was always my favourite Corry character and I love Vera Lynn.

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 27/08/2021 14:51

Really makes me think of the Corrie character. I like Alba, if you want to go along that phonetic vibe.

Cindie943811A · 28/08/2021 23:28

I understood the name came into use during the Crimean War after the battle of that name — so for me it is tainted by that.

Redsquirrel5 · 28/08/2021 23:35

We had a neighbour called Alma who is a lovely, caring lady. It isn’t a name that you hear very often.

ZednotZee · 28/08/2021 23:49

I would love to meet a little Alma.

Its pretty and refreshingly uncommon but not in any way novel.

Has my seal of approval OP.
