We’re looking for a boys name that fits nicely with his big sister Margot. We love the name Gilbert (Gil / Bertie) and also love the name Hamish (no real nickname). Which one do you think works better? Thanks. Xx

I think Hamish fits perfectly. Not a massive fan of Gilbert, but that’s just personal preference. Do you have any Scottish connections? I’m always mildly surprised by Hamish if you’re not Scottish/have Scottish family but again that’s just me!

DotDotDotDotDot · 17/08/2021 19:56

Definitely Hamish, it’s a lovely name. Sorry but I don’t think I could take someone with the name Gilbert seriously.

emmathedilemma · 17/08/2021 20:31

Hamish, it’s a great name that suits all ages and characters.
I can’t get past the Gilbert cartoon strip!

ChavDiningHalls · 17/08/2021 20:32

Hamish ❤️❤️❤️

wizzler · 17/08/2021 20:38

Hamid

I meant hamish!

Jerry

Cbeebiesrehab · 17/08/2021 20:50

Hamish by a long way.

ChaosMoon · 17/08/2021 20:51

Hamish. Gilbert somehow makes Margot sounds quite harsh. To me, anyway. I think it's all the Gs together

EmmaGellerGreen · 17/08/2021 20:52

Jerry

Hamish is better

Ekofisk · 17/08/2021 20:56

Got to be Jerry.

I'm Scottish and there is no such thing as a name with no real nickname up here, as you will discover when wee Hammy starts school! Gibby and Gilly are common shortened names of Gilbert. I know one of each and in my living memory have never known either to be called Gilbert.

SquigglePigs · 17/08/2021 21:16

Hamish is much nicer than Gilbert for me.

Seriouslymole · 17/08/2021 21:16

Margot is a gorgeous name. Gilbert is not - possibly ruined for me by my father who referred to bogies as Green Gilberts 🤢.

How about Robert shortened to Bertie? Or Bertram…which I also love!

Babydust13 · 17/08/2021 21:52

Gilbert is awesome 👏🏻

Lalliella · 17/08/2021 23:16

Jerry

Gilbert is awful, reminds me of a fish's gills.
Bertie is nice.

Can't be anything other than Jerry 😅

irresistibleoverwhelm · 18/08/2021 01:30

I love Gilbert! Very Anne of Green Gables! 😍 It goes perfectly with Margot. Very 1940s.

Shortened to Bertie, it’s very Wodehouse!

Or for alternatives, what about:
Giles
Gideon
Barnaby/Barney
Reuben

Or if you want more 1940s, what about an underused classic like John?

bloominglovelyorange · 19/08/2021 14:22

Peter

If not I like Hamish

dun1urkin · 19/08/2021 14:25

Jerry. Obviously.

Rosesviolets · 19/08/2021 14:50

Personally I love Gilbert. Really love it. Not nearly as keen on Hamish and I don't think it matches as well with Margot. They are both similarly elegant in feel so I think they complement each other well. I also like Gil or Bertie as nn. Do those abbreviations work with your surname?

I don't know anything about the "Gilbert" strip as a PP mentioned, I don't think it's that commonly known.
