10 days old and still no name

Baby boy was born 10 days ago and we still can't decide on a name!

We love names that can have nicknames/be shortened.

My whole pregnancy we thought we would call the baby Winston but he just doesn't seem like one now. We still like it but not sure it suits him.

We like Arthur but not how popular it's become. But we like Artie and Art as nn.

We liked Malachi but it can be pronounced two different ways Mala(Kai) or Mala(chy) and I prefer Malakai and OH prefers Malachy. But we're both not sure. I like Mally and Kai as nn aswell.

Casper was also thrown into the mix.

I know it's silly but baby doesn't seem to suit an all out strong name and maybe suits something more chilled out or different/unusual apposed to traditional names.

We are open to anything at the moment and desperately need help!

Surname is Mcdermott often shortened to Mack by friends/family.

I also like Nicholas shortened to Nick

Can’t help with the names but just to say that ours were both a fortnight old when they had names. Booking the registrar definitely focusses the mind! Our second son’s name was agreed in the car on the way!

What about Rowan. I liked it a lot but my sons just didn’t look like a Rowan. Hence arguing for a fortnight.

Arthur seems to me to fit well Smile That it's popular wouldn't worry me as much as your concerns about the other names.

I have a Jude. One name I really liked but couldn't convince my partner was Gene.

You need to choose a name that you both like and stop worrying about whether it's popular or not....however based on what you've said I would go for something that's classic and can be shortened - not "out there/trying too hard to be original" (and I don't think any of these are that common for babies now so you won't have a nursery full)
E.g.

Joseph
Alexander
Matthew
Christopher
Benjamin

Popularity of names is a bit over estimated as an issue. The most popular top 5 names still only mean around 1 in 100 children are called it!

ILoveShula · 30/07/2021 19:40

It doesn't really work like that IRL poodlepip. The 1 in 100 is the average across the country. You might find that there are 4 with the name in his reception class or he could go through school being the only one. You can't tell.
