Of course you can. I have a friend whose daughter is 'just' Kit.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 21/07/2021 17:37

I think these could easily have Kit as a nickname. She may want the choice of a more formal name as she gets older.
Kristina,
Christianne
Katrina

I have a name which can be considered a shortened/nickname & people assume it is supposed to be something else. It's a pain, don't like it, & dislike my short middle name as well so lucked out there!

HoldingTheDoor · 21/07/2021 17:38

Kit is very much a boy name for me.

IVflytrap · 21/07/2021 17:38

It doesnt have to be short for Katherine. Could be:

Katrina
Kataleya
Keturah
Katie

The main thing about Kit is I don't know if I'd necessarily want it to be my full name, as it makes me think of PE kits, "have you got your kit together?" type thing (might just be me?) I'm someone with a longer birth certificate name that has multiple potential shortenings and nicknames, and I quite like having the option. I'm currently going by one shortening at work and a different one with friends and family. Obviously other people may feel differently.

ImInStealthMode · 21/07/2021 17:39

I know a 'just' Kit and have to admit I don't love it as a full name.

I also know a Kit that's a Catriona and Kit that's a Kate.

PotteringAlong · 21/07/2021 17:40

It’s a boys name…. It’s a shortening / nickname for Christopher.

For a girl, then I would go Kat from Katherine.

buckleten · 21/07/2021 17:40

How about Kitty shortened to Kit? There was a Kitty in my daughters primary and I always thought it was a pretty name.

RandomMess · 21/07/2021 17:45

Surely just go with Kitty?

JackOfGentleman · 21/07/2021 18:36

It's a boys name.

occa · 21/07/2021 18:38

I really like it as a boy's name but haven't met a female one I don't think.

Elspethelf · 21/07/2021 18:43

Kit may have been a boy nickname originally but names are more gender neutral these days. I love Kitty or Kit for a girl. Absolutely you can just use Kit as her full name.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 21/07/2021 18:43

I've only ever seen it used as a shortening for a boy, usually Christopher. Agree with others, could Kit be short for Kitty?

Namechangenumber23 · 21/07/2021 18:45

Kathleen Kennedy was Kick. I love Kit for a girl and had a friend at school who used it.

woodfort · 21/07/2021 19:08

I’ve never come across Kit for a girl.

As Kit is a nickname for Christopher, for a girl why not Christina or Christabel or something?

Chilldonaldchill · 21/07/2021 20:18

Why not use Kitty?

Heartofglass12345 · 21/07/2021 21:58

I like Kit! It's differentSmile

SnakeyTakey · 21/07/2021 22:45

The only female Kit that comes to mind is Kit de Luca from Pretty Woman. I like it though.

ragged · 21/07/2021 22:48

I can't warm to Kitty. It's just wrong.

I did not know Kit was supposed to be linked to Katheryn (choose your spelling).

TheOnlyKoiInAPondOfGoldfish · 21/07/2021 22:53

If you give her a nice long name like Katherine then SHE can choose what version of that she wants - as she goes through life she can reinvent herself as Kath, Kathie, Kitty, Kit, Kat.... You can always call her Kit if that's the nickname you prefer.

My DC have longer names - As adults they all have 'versions' of their name that are different to the versions we used when they were little.

I have a short name, with no real options for being creative - think a name like Claire or Ruth. I like my name, but always wanted to have more options.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/07/2021 23:07

You can... but its very trendy so you have to risk she might not appreciate it in 30/40 years time.

If you hate Katherine you could use one of the Chris- variations instead (Christabel, Kirsten etc) as a longer version, or I've even heard Kit short for Claudia and Tabitha (presumably because of their "Cat" links).

Or give her another "K" first name with "I" and "T" middle names?

peaceinourtime · 22/07/2021 08:46

Go for it as a stand alone name.

Tal45 · 22/07/2021 10:13

I'd go Kitty too with nickname Kit.

MrsRussell · 22/07/2021 10:37

My re-enactment name was Kit, short for Christian, which historically was a woman's name.

NursePotato · 22/07/2021 10:42

It's my first name, so yes!

pinkyredrose · 22/07/2021 12:33

Just call her Kit.
