Unique boy's names

expectinglittlebear · 12/07/2021 16:17

Both myself and DH prefer the more unusual names (we both have quite unusual names ourselves). We already have 3-4 options chosen for a girl, but none set in stone for a boy yet.

We want both a first and middle name that work well together, with our surname which starts with an M and has two syllables.

We have the following names picked out that we like. Are there any variations or similar names you can suggest? TIA.

Hudson
Greyson
Archie
Hugo
Roman
Ezra
Theo
Milo
Axel
Noah
River
Kai
Elijah
Harrison
Tate
Bear

Aside perhaps Bear, they are all run of the mill names these days.

Think I prefer Ezra the most.

How about Zeke, Titus, Tudor or Reed?

kezziethegingercat · 12/07/2021 16:45

I wouldn't say many of your list were unusual. I know lots of Noahs and Ezras in particular. When I was expecting my ds I looked at the ons data, particularly names outside of the top 100, to get more of an accurate idea of unusual names.

GreenCrayon · 12/07/2021 16:45

If you're looking for a unique and unusual name you need to look at ons statistics.

Apart from Bear and maybe River you've basically just listed the boys names off the register of most primary schools in many parts of the UK.

miltonj · 12/07/2021 16:48

None of those (apart from maybe bear) are that rare. But don't call your kid bear!
More rare names might be:
Roderick
Demetrius
Xerxes
Ambrose
Sylvester

Palavah · 12/07/2021 16:52

Yeah none of those is unique. Most are increasingly popular.

Aloysius
Clive
Kenneth
Peregrine

Are more unusual for baby boys now

2tired2bewitty · 12/07/2021 16:58

If you want him to be the only one in his class I’d be thinking more of
Peter
Paul
David
Robert
Stephen
Gareth
Simon
Basically, my male classmates back in 1984 Grin

Cowbells · 12/07/2021 17:01

I think your list is fairly mainstream these days, except Hudson - haven't come across any of them.

How about
Maddox
Lazlo
Cosmo
Arlo
Bruno,
Wulfric (Wolfie nn)
Conan
Cassius

Avocadowoman · 12/07/2021 17:01

Well if you want it to be unique you need to make it up, and then hope no one likes it and therefore doesn’t copy you!

If you want unusual, I don’t know any children called Hudson, Grayson, Tate or Bear, but I know all the others from a relatively small pool of children.

Avocadowoman · 12/07/2021 17:02

I know a Cosmo, Argo and Wulfric!

SleepingStandingUp · 12/07/2021 17:02

Hudson / Greyson - both quote American but fine
Archie - really not unusual or unique.
Hugo - ok
Roman - meh
Ezra - love, along was Ezriel and Ezekiel
Theo - very very popular
Milo - no
Axel - I like
Noah - very popular
River - fairly popular but I do like it
Kai - prefer Malakai
Elijah - like
Harrison - see Hudson and Greyson
Tate - no
Bea - girl

SleepingStandingUp · 12/07/2021 17:03

@Avocadowoman

I know a Cosmo, Argo and Wulfric!
I know a Wulfric, I love it.
ILoveStickers · 12/07/2021 17:04

Current popularity of your list, if you're interested:

Hudson #92
Greyson #347 (Grayson is #72)
Archie #19
Hugo #48
Roman #59
Ezra #60
Theo #16
Milo #108
Axel #228
Noah #3
River #194 (and #167 for girls)
Kai #109
Elijah #38
Harrison #37
Tate #410
Bear #382

All have risen very steeply in the last 25 years, except Kai (which has gone up but only a bit).

The most unusual on your list are Bear, Axel and Tate. The others aren't really "unusual" anymore - though they are all unusual in older generations.

ChikiTIKI · 12/07/2021 17:05

Asher

Kanaloa · 12/07/2021 17:06

Lots of these are very nice names, but not at all unique or even unusual. Noah, Archie, Kai & Theo, while lovely, are extremely popular. Roman, Hugo & Harrison are also fairly popular. They’re all nice though, except Bear which I really dislike. I just dislike names like that - would you like to go into Starbucks as a 42 year old man and say yes mocha chino for Bear please.

Kanaloa · 12/07/2021 17:07

Axel & Tate are relatively unusual though. I quite like Axel.

RavenclawsRoar · 12/07/2021 17:08

I really like Axel from that list. Archie, Theo, Harrison, Noah and Ezra are really popular so avoid if you want unusual.

EileenGC · 12/07/2021 17:11

I like Theo and Noah but they're not unusual, more like top 10 (in the UK). Lovely names though!

Amdone123 · 12/07/2021 17:11

Quinn ?

Bitofachinwag · 12/07/2021 17:12

How unusual do you want? Like PP said, look at names from 1960s/70s. How about Nigel, Mark or Mike?

Bitofachinwag · 12/07/2021 17:13

Or Gareth?

INeedtobealone · 12/07/2021 17:13

Dexter
Mason
Fletcher
Jethro
Jonah
Joel
Eric
Cole
Micah
Otis
Otto
Seth
Zeph
Asher
Archer
Ivan
Ivo
Lionel

SirSamuelVimes · 12/07/2021 17:14

Dennis would be pretty unique these days.
Or Andrew.
Or Keith.

Your list is just run of the mill try-hard I'm afraid.

Cowbells · 12/07/2021 17:22

@SleepingStandingUp - I wanted Wulfric for DS2. DH refused. DS2 is now livid with DH as he thinks it is a very cool name. Grin

MadameOvary81 · 12/07/2021 17:30

How about Skyler or Caspian/Casper?

As several other have said, your name list is incredibly popular. Your DS won't be unique. Especially Noah...I know several.

What are your girl names and maybe be can find male alternatives?
