Emily vs Natalie

We're deciding between Emily June (we would call her Emmy when she is young) and Natalie June. Which name would you choose? Any thoughts for us to consider? We aren't worried about popularity.

Natalie isn't great in certain accents (e.g. NE where I live, cockney - anywhere where the T is dropped) so I'd choose Emily. Natalie also feels a bit dated but not yet due a revival.

Chunkymenrock · 10/07/2021 07:22

Totally agree that Emily is dreary and utterly boring. Natalie nicer, although I much refer Naomi.

cptartapp · 10/07/2021 07:28

Natalie by a mile. Strong. Far far less of them.

withpeaceandlove · 10/07/2021 07:29

I'd say it depends where you live as Natalie doesn't sound nice with a Yorkshire accent. My friend started going by Talia in high school for that exact reason

Lavenderpillow · 10/07/2021 07:31

Natalie will get shortened to Nat all the time unfortunately.

Estasala · 10/07/2021 07:32

Natalie is lovely and pretty. Emily is very plain.

ArsendLupin · 10/07/2021 07:34

I love Natalie and my parents wanted to call me this BUT in the Scottish town where I was born everyone dropped the 't' and it sounded horrendous.

I think with Natasha or Natalia people are much less likely to drop the t, if that's an option?

Emily is very pretty and classic, but I think it's a bit less interesting.

June is a lovely middle name. Smile

Datsandcogs · 10/07/2021 09:35

Emily, classic, love it!

LewishamMum · 10/07/2021 09:50

I think Emily is pretentious personally - I prefer Emma. I think Natalie will become Nat unless right from the start you just always call her Natty. Or there's Natasha as others have suggested - very under used these days, and my DDs name :).

Welshflowerpower · 10/07/2021 09:52

I don’t think Natalie is quite there yet IYSWIM

Welshflowerpower · 10/07/2021 09:53

@ArsendLupin I was just thinking of Na-alie or it’s more Na-alay isn’t it Grin

Daisy829 · 10/07/2021 09:55

I have an Emily. I wish I had given her the middle name June as thats my birthday month but I didn’t think of it. How annoying. I like both to be honest & like Emmy & Nat as shortened versions. Not much help am i.

PearlNextDoor · 10/07/2021 09:57

Natalie is not great imo but Emily is so popular. Emily is prettier but so over used. It's a tough one.

What about Natasha? Seems less Na'al eeee

miltonj · 10/07/2021 10:01

I like Natalie, but I'm guilty of not pronouncing the t in my friend Natalie's name but using a glottal stop instead. I don't mean to. It might be regional so depends where you live. If you chose Natalia instead this wouldn't be an issue as the t flows different forcing it to be pronounced!

Frazzled2207 · 10/07/2021 10:04

Natalie June is fab.
Like Emily but millions of them. I don’t know any little Natalies.

Vikingintraining · 10/07/2021 10:19

Natalie - so pretty! I know a young one who has the nickname Tilly.

ArsendLupin · 10/07/2021 11:18

Yep, or with the worst offenders in the town where I was born it's a sort of Nu - ulay 😩

KirstenBlest · 10/07/2021 12:03

Not keen on either. Emily is nice enough but so popular.

Natalie with be Nat or Na-erly

Chachachawoo · 11/07/2021 13:22

Agree with @IamnotwhouthinkIam
Both lovely names but Nat or Natty sound horrible as a no whereas Emmy is lovely
I would go with Emily

Brutal for the Emily's out there 😂
user1493494961 · 08/08/2021 18:46

Emily is a classic, Natalie isn't.

Apeirogon · 08/08/2021 18:49

Emily - beautiful

Ikeameatballs · 08/08/2021 18:56

I love Emily despite it’s popularity. I also love Emmy/Emmie as nn.

I don’t really warm to Natalie. Natalia is better.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 08/08/2021 19:40

DD was born around Christmas time and I did consider Natasha which is a lovely name, but the prevalent British mispronunciation (with the emphasis on "tash") and the slang meaning really put me off. I do like Natalie (when pronounced correctly!) but Emily is a bit too popular for me.

GoodbyeToCare · 08/08/2021 19:45

Natalie is lovely but only if said properly so if you live in an area where the /t/ will be dropped I would think again.
