A beautiful name, you probably know it means star.
Can't think of any nicknames.

HeddaGarbled · 09/07/2021 00:02

My mum’s a Stella and my dad called her Stell (as in Hell’s Bells Stell).

JamMakingWannaBe · 09/07/2021 00:05

I think Stella is a nn for Estelle. On my list but vetoed by DH due to the lager.

Insert1x20p · 09/07/2021 00:06

I have one. Some people do worry about the lager connection. We've never had that issue - admittedly don't live in the UK but the brand is widely available and we have a lot of British friends.

She had a nickname but nothing to do with her actual name. I don't think it really lends itself to shortening. I guess maybe Ella, but then I'd just call her that.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/07/2021 02:05

Lovely - a vintage name that I can see eventually gaining much more popularity (on the coattails of popular Ella). I doubt you'd get a nn since it's short already (other than maybe "Stell/Elle" possibly?)

I really don't think the lager matters - most associations will likely be "star" imo (since the meaning of the name is fairly well known) and "A Streetcar named Desire" play/film (some wit might well yell "Stella" in a Brando impersonation at some point in her life since it's a classic).

I think similar Estella is lovely too - although people will then think "Great Expectations" instead!

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/07/2021 02:06

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and beer.

Anystarinthesky · 09/07/2021 02:32

I prefer Estelle or Estella.

RainbowMum11 · 09/07/2021 02:36

Stella Artois aka wife beater
It's a lovely name but this would def put me off

RainbowMum11 · 09/07/2021 02:37

If you want the star meaning, I'd prob go for Estelle or Sterre

starrynight21 · 09/07/2021 02:43

I'm a Stella - I've always loved my name. The only nickname I ever got was when Dad called me Stella Bella. And it means a star - what more could anyone want ?

Yellowmoons · 09/07/2021 02:56

It's ok, but I'd be put off by the lager. I much prefer Seren - Welsh for star.

FreakyPurple · 09/07/2021 04:12

We have a Stella and it suits her perfectly. My ILs call her Stella Bella, or Bella. I call her Stelly. Her friends call her Ella, Stells and Stell.

VenusClapTrap · 09/07/2021 21:04

Not keen. Lager.

girlmama32 · 09/07/2021 21:08

It's a lovely name, an old classic. I wouldn't worry too much about the beer reference.

Kanaloa · 09/07/2021 21:28

It’s nice. I wouldn’t say it needs a nickname as it’s quite short & sweet anyway.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 09/07/2021 21:32

It's a beautiful name & not that common.
(However knowing Sod's law you'll probably end up knowing 2 or 3 in years to come. Though that can happen with any name)

Ambiguouscat · 09/07/2021 21:37

18 year old DD is livid that I didn’t name her Stella

CoffeeAndCaramel · 10/07/2021 14:25

Sorry but it's absolutely awful . Instantly think of a beer

MadeOfStarStuff · 10/07/2021 14:47

Weirdly I love Estella but not just Stella on its own or Estelle

I don’t think there’s really a natural nickname for Stella though except Stell which isn’t very nice. Maybe Ella but then I’d think why not just call her Ella or Eleanor?

Ellmau · 10/07/2021 15:20

Stella is lovely. Star would be a nice nickname. You might get Stelz though from her friends, which is awful imo.

DramaAlpaca · 10/07/2021 22:32

Lovely name.

Galaxyinmypocket · 10/07/2021 22:33

Love it. One of my fave names

TatianaBis · 10/07/2021 23:49

Like. And Estella too.

Have a good friend called Stella - call her Stell and Stelli.

TatianaBis · 10/07/2021 23:50

Also - Stella by Starlight is such a great song.
