Brooke Cameron

This should maybe go in baby names... but it is a disagreement between my husband and I so I posted here for traffic!

Baby #2 due in a couple of weeks. If it's a boy we'll probably call him Brodie if it's a girl I like the name Brooke.

Problem is that our surname is Cameron and DH insists that the name would be said as Broo Cameron/Brooke Ameron....

I think if you hold the final 'k' a fraction of a second longer it's clear what the name is!

AIBU?
YANBU -A) That's a perfectly fine name don't over think it...
YABU- B) He's right I'm afraid- she'll have a lifetime of correcting people.

I don't know why your DH would think that. Not many people would have cause to say the names together anyway. When it comes to medical appointments, the Staff are used to saying all sorts of names.

NuffSaidSam · 06/07/2021 20:09

I think it's fine.

You're presumably not going to call her by her full name (unless she's been really naughty!)?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 06/07/2021 20:17

If your surname was Hunt would you call your son Michael?

Wannakisstheteacher · 06/07/2021 20:20

Perfectly fine name, your DH is being ridiculous.

BeeKeeping · 06/07/2021 20:21

@VeniVidiWeeWee I don't get it?! I'm in the bath saying Michael Hunt over and over like a loon and it sounds fine to me Confused

What if you shorten it to Mike, op?

samyeagar · 06/07/2021 20:23

The short name for Michael...

fourminutestosavetheworld · 06/07/2021 20:24

Generally thing names sound odd when the first name ends with the same sound as the one the surname starts with.

Don't personally think Brooke Cameron works for that reason, all rolls into one long name.

SoupDragon · 06/07/2021 20:25

I think Brooke Cameron is very awkward sounding.

MaMelon · 06/07/2021 20:25

I’m with your DH - it doesn’t flow well at all.

Floralnomad · 06/07/2021 20:25

I don’t think it’s an issue ( and definitely not like the Mike Hunt one) , I only know one Brooke in real life and she is the loveliest person so I may have a slight bias towards the name .

KindergartenKop · 06/07/2021 20:26

I have a name like this. Don't do it!

SometimesIFeedTheSparrows · 06/07/2021 20:27

It's not as bad as Mike - or indeed Isaac - Hunt but if you have another choice then use it.

RuthW · 06/07/2021 20:31

I agree with your dh

Utilityroomenvy · 06/07/2021 20:32

I love the name Brodie. I think that works really well for a girl or boy actually. How about Bridie for a girl?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/07/2021 20:32

The thing I thought was it sounds like
Boot Camp.

WestendVBroadway · 06/07/2021 20:54

I know what your DH is saying. I went to school with a Liese Morgen, who became known as Leigh Smorgen.

3Britnee · 06/07/2021 20:55

It'll be pronounced bruh-cama-ron. I wouldn't use this name.

NeepNeepNeep · 06/07/2021 20:57

What other names do you like?

DinaofCloud9 · 06/07/2021 21:00

I agree with your DH. My name's is like this and it can be a pain.

CoddledAsAMommet · 06/07/2021 21:01

I also hear Brooke Ameron, sorry.

BeeKeeping · 06/07/2021 21:11

Ahhhrgh! I can't believe I'm losing this battle! That's what AIBU is good for I suppose... a bit of perspective!

@NeepNeepNeep The long list is a very long list I'm afraid and nothing is perfect...

DD1 is Maeve for context

Freya - very popular, bit meh
Ula- sounds too Irish when paired with Maeve? Too unusual?
Lena- pronunciation issues lee/len
Nina- forgettable?
Lara- too closely associated with Croft?!
Cora- close friends have one - too alliterative with Cameron...?
Alma- too similar to Alan? Dowdy...?
Faye- quite popular, no spark
Isla- sooo popular

Not Bridie!

It's what we call a steak pasty up here in Scotland...

Frazzled2207 · 06/07/2021 21:17

I have a feeling I am not pronouncing it as others do because there are two back to back /k/ sounds which is grating. Feels like you have to draw breath between them.
Brodie Cameron is lovely.

MaMelon · 06/07/2021 21:20

Cameron is a Scottish surname and given that you’re going for Brodie (love that name so much!) if it’s a boy what about continuing the Scottish theme? Eg.
Flora
Ailsa
Elsie
Skye
Iona
Eilidh (pronunciation issues here I suppose)
