Not a fan of ie ending names, fine for a little boy but not for a man who wants to be taken seriously.

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 22/06/2021 19:45

Ah my boys names are on here ❤️

I have none to add but I had an Uncle Eddie who was a multi-millionaire so I really don’t think people struggled to take him seriously because his name ended in IE. If anyone did have an opinion, I doubt he gave 2 flying shits.

I love Chandie.
Wouldn't use Vinnie, it's the name of our female cleaner at the office....

TatianaBis · 22/06/2021 19:51
@TatianaBis Louie is higher up in the ONS charts than the french spelling Louis
I cringe for them.

Louie is basically for people who don’t know how to pronounce Louis.

TotorosCatBus · 22/06/2021 19:53

Or they are from cultures or have links to cultures where Louis is pronounced Lewis (eg the US)

The Louis/Louie debate....

So Lewis is the anglicized of Louis agree. Louis I french is pronounced Loo-ee. However I England it's ok for Lewis and Louis to also be pronounced Loo- iss. Of course there is Luis too.

Its also acceptable to be the french pronounced louis and louie!

Biggest problem is which spelling and which pronunciation!

No need to call people illiterate, rude.

notacooldad · 22/06/2021 19:59

Harvey (not sure how popular that’d be!)
Quite popular I'd imagine. I know quite a few from teenagers to babies.

Lewis is an island off the coast of Scotland.

ByTheStarryNight · 22/06/2021 20:27

I'm old fashioned but recommend giving the full name (e.g. Thomas) and then using the amended version as a nickname, so Tommy. Then your child has a choice of whether to go more traditional later. What's cute for a baby isn't necessarily great for an adult becoming a High Court Judge.

I know people will disagree with me, that's the good thing about opinions Wink

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 22/06/2021 20:37

Does it have to be 'ie' or is 'y' ok?

Violetlavenders · 22/06/2021 20:38

Louie is becoming the more popular spelling in the UK. It makes the pronunciation clear.

Luis and Louis are generally pronounced Loo-is outside of France.

And a name!

Violetlavenders · 22/06/2021 20:41

Exactly. St Louis in Missouri for example is pronounced Loo-is. And in Germany Louis is also pronounced Lou-is.
