What do people think of this name for a boy? Pronounced Ad-lay?.

Too similar to Aldi

MaMaD1990 · 04/06/2021 16:01

It really does look like Aldi. Sorry.

MrsFin · 04/06/2021 16:05

As in Stevenson? That's the only other one I know.
Not keen.
Are you religious? Because it means "God is just" according to Google.

Nightbear · 04/06/2021 16:06

Like the Vice President? I like it.

ihatebindweed · 04/06/2021 16:07

Not familiar with it .. and can't say I like it.. what about Adeline, Alina or Ada ?

TheVanguardSix · 04/06/2021 16:08

I love this name!
Adlai Stephenson comes to mind.

Fnib · 04/06/2021 16:08

@ihatebindweed none of those would be great for a boy I don't think

TheVanguardSix · 04/06/2021 16:09

Sorry, SteVenson,not StePHenson.

effoffpigeon · 04/06/2021 16:13

We aren’t religious but it doesn’t bother us. Our eldest is called Esai, pronounced EE-sigh. Adlai is the only other name we like as much. Any other suggestions are welcome!

I think Adlai goes really well with Esai, they both sound lovely!

I wouldn't worry about any religious connotations, lots and lots of names have religious origins/meanings.

Yep not too bothered about the religious connotations. And thank you :)

Oh sorry I didn't realise it was for a boy 😳

You have to pick what you like ultimately, I don't think other peoples opinions should matter. I think this board is great for suggestions or alternatives. However your choice is incredibly similar to your other child's name ( I see from your updates)

TheMotherlode · 04/06/2021 16:50

It’s quite an unusual name so I’m finding hard to have much of an opinion on it.

Those two names do go remarkably well together though.

I think just go for it if you like it.

effoffpigeon · 04/06/2021 17:07

I think one of the main reasons I like it so much is because I think it goes well with DS1’s name.

It’s only the last 2 letters that are the same but they aren’t pronounced the same. So it’s Ad-Lay and Ee-sigh

I like it, easy spell and say but unusual enough to be memorable.

SionnachRua · 04/06/2021 17:33

Never heard it before but I really, really like it.

effoffpigeon · 04/06/2021 18:33

Oh I’m glad it’s getting some more positive comments.

BingBongToTheMoon · 04/06/2021 18:34

It seems fine to me. Go for it.

Candyapple49 · 04/06/2021 18:43

I like it . Refreshingly different and goes really well with his brother’s name .

Ellmau · 04/06/2021 19:12

I think you will find a lot of people who see it written first will pronounce it Ad-lye. How annoying will you and your DC find that?

nocoolnamesleft · 04/06/2021 19:16

Just to say that I would have assumed Add-lye pronunciation.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 04/06/2021 19:25

It will cause confusion that the name endings have the same spelling but a different pronunciation. I would also have guessed ad-lie on first reading.

effoffpigeon · 04/06/2021 19:29

Not too bothered about people pronouncing it wrong if they see it written first, it already happens with DS1 and DH’s name but after they’re corrected it usually doesn’t happen again. I understand the issue with the name endings being the same but pronounced different, but that will only be an issue if people see it written first

Emmelina · 04/06/2021 19:32

It looks like a ‘cre8ive’ spelling/mispronunciation of Adelaide to me, for that reason I wouldn’t choose it myself. Sorry.
