Sullivan or Vince

So we're 18 days away from csection! Baby's gender is unknown.. we're set on a girls name but really struggling for a boy!

I loved Sullivan from the start but always get ready for the negative responses from people which kind of puts me off. My fiancé still loves it - I just don't know if I'm brave enough to use it.

Another name we've came across is Vince, just Vince though this wouldn't be short for Vincent.

Middle name will likely be Lloyd - my late Nan's maiden name.

Sullivan Lloyd
Vince Lloyd

Please help! 🙃

Of those 2, I prefer Sullivan

SometimesRavenSometimesParrot · 03/06/2021 12:33

I like both, sorry I know that’s not helpful! Probably slightly prefer Vince, although I like the nickname options for Sullivan!

user1495884211 · 03/06/2021 12:39

Sullivan. I think Vince doesn't lend itself well to middle names as the s sound rolls into the middle name. Vincent Lloyd sounds better to my ears but you've already said you would want the name to be just Vince.

Standrewsschool · 03/06/2021 12:41

Sullivan!

Serpenta · 03/06/2021 12:42

They sound like two the names of two old NYC cops. Working in Vice.

I do really like Vincent but couldn’t pick Vince all by itself. So that one’s out for me. And I’m Irish so this trend of Irish surnames as first names doesn’t really work for me, as I know eleventy million people with the surname Sullivan.

kerosene20 · 03/06/2021 12:44

Sullivan is such a long name I imagine it’ll virtually always be Sully, which is a dogs name or monsters inc for all kids! I don’t mind it though. Vince does sound like a grumpy old man with a cig in his mouth to me 👀I suppose it depends what you like. how about Vance as an alternative?

daisypond · 03/06/2021 12:46

Out of those, Sullivan. I really like Vincent, but not Vince.

Standrewsschool · 03/06/2021 12:48

Solomon and Montgomery are similar alternatives (if you want suggestions).

Iwantcauliflowercheese · 03/06/2021 13:22

Vince sounds like a criminal in a soap opera. Sorry OP, but it's a nickname or shortened version of Vincent. What's wrong with calling him Vincent? Sullivan is awful. The word sully means to ruin or spoil.

DotDotDotDotDot · 03/06/2021 13:44

I do like Sullivan although as a pp mentioned the word Sully doesn’t have a good meaning so that would put me off. I prefer Vince or Vinny as a nn for Vincent - sorry to sound like a typical mumsnetter on that one! How about Lloyd as the first name? If you want any other surname type ideas for boys I really like Fraser, Flynn or Cameron. Good luck.

BluePeterVag · 03/06/2021 16:12

I love them both. Sullivan has the edge for me.

inmyslippers · 03/06/2021 16:14

Sullivan

partyatthepalace · 03/06/2021 16:25

If those two, Sullivan

Vince Lloyd sounds like a world of trouble...

MaMelon · 03/06/2021 16:31

Sullivan Lloyd has a better ring to it (but I’m not really keen on the name).

Vince Lloyd sounds like he’s got a dodgy business dahn the east end innit.

BeesAnkles · 03/06/2021 16:56

@daisypond

Out of those, Sullivan. I really like Vincent, but not Vince.
Agreed.
elfran · 03/06/2021 17:39

I like Sullivan best, not keen on Vince (though I love Vincent with nn Vin, go figure). Sully is a cute nn!

GreyhoundG1rl · 03/06/2021 17:42

Don't lumber the poor boy with either of those.

AuntieMarys · 03/06/2021 17:48

Vince sounds like a 50s Teddy boy, manning the waltzers.

messeduphair · 03/06/2021 17:52

They do sound a little thuggish! Sorry! I think Sullivan could be better

cariadlet · 03/06/2021 18:13

Neither.

Sullivan is a surname and Vince sounds like a tv thug (or the male lead from the 80s comedy Just Good Friends).

KingAragorn · 03/06/2021 18:19

Love Sullivan! Not too keen on Vince. Both names are quite bold, so you’ll probably get a lot of opinions. I chose bolder names for my DC, had mixed responses on here!

Strokethefurrywall · 03/06/2021 18:20

DS2 is a Sullivan (he’s 7), and he loves his name.

Prefers to be called Sully, we get nothing but compliments on his name both here where we live and when we visit the UK.

You don’t need bravery, it’s a very cool name! My Sullivan was named because I fancy the shit out of Sullivan Stapleton (Aussie actor) and DH loved the name too.

I do love Vinnie, but obviously I am biased to Sullivan!

romdowa · 03/06/2021 18:21

I'd pick Vince but that's mainly because I find surnames strange as first names. I know too many people with the surnames 🤣🤣

KirstenBlest · 03/06/2021 18:39

Use Lloyd as the first name. It's much better than the other two, which are pretty grim.

Mischance · 03/06/2021 18:41

Vince makes me think of a spiv - sorry!

Not wild abut Sullivan TBH!!
