Me again... So, I was pretty set on Phoebe and then I began warming to Fern again, and then someone suggested Ffion, which is basically halfway between them, and also a Welsh name, the same as dd1 (though we don't live in Wales) I'm going round in circles, please help me decide!

Hi do you pronunce Ffion?

Undersnatch · 25/05/2021 09:42

I like all 3! Sorry that’s no use but doesn’t often happen on these threads for me. Phoebe is my favourite I think though.

Ffion is pronounced fee-on.

Ffion

CaffiSaliMali · 25/05/2021 09:58

If you're the lady whose DD1 is Nia then Nia and Ffion are lovely.

Phoebe and Fern are also nice. I think for me my favourites are Ffion, Phoebe and then Fern.

Lb1204 · 25/05/2021 09:59

Fiona?

Yep, that's me - definitely posting too much on here at the moment! 😳 They would go nicely together.

Strangely, I really dislike Fiona...

I like Ffion. You certainly don't hear of many. I haven't anyway.
Phoebe is lovely, but somewhat dated. I think Fern is a classic.
Nia and Ffion. Lovely.

Stevearnottsbeard · 25/05/2021 10:15

Love fern but think ffion is a nice compromise and think it would make a refreshing change

CoffeeCakey · 25/05/2021 10:17

I love Ffion.

Jocasta2018 · 25/05/2021 10:36

Amongst a certain generation Phoebe will always be 'that one' from Friends.

I like Ffion but Fern is also nice! Maybe you can flip for it?

Amdone123 · 25/05/2021 10:43

Yes, Nia and Fern also sounds lovely.

Tal45 · 25/05/2021 10:48

Don't like Phobe, love Fern, like Ffion - but seems a strange choice to me if you're not Welsh unlike Nia which I didn't even realise was Welsh.

Welsh heritage and learning Welsh, but mainly English and living in England. Though to be honest, I'm not sure it matters much - plenty of Welsh names used widely by English people - Dylan, Rhys Seren, Megan etc. I'm sure at one time these choices may have seemed more unusual.

Ffion is great. Fern and Phoebe are ok but I personally dislike Phoebe as it makes me think of "feeble".

spiderlight · 25/05/2021 11:57

I much prefer Ffion, out of those three. It goes beautifully with Nia.

mummywithtwokidsplusdog · 25/05/2021 12:12

I really like Fern. Like Phoebe too but does make me think of ‘friends’ every time I hear it. Ffion will need to spell and found out her name every time - - might be a consideration?

Topseyt · 25/05/2021 12:21

Ffion for me. Lovely name.

TatianaBis · 25/05/2021 12:44

Love Phoebe. Dislike Fern and Ffion.

There are much nicer Welsh names - Manon, Esyllt, Carys, Gwenhwyfar.

ILoveShula · 25/05/2021 13:14

I like them all but Fern seems to be popular all of a sudden.

Fern - will get Ferne. and Fearne.
Phoebe - some will write it FeeBee or Pheobe
Ffion - too similar to Fionn?

Ffion is the one I know most of, but I know many Nias.

LilacSloth · 25/05/2021 13:21

Fern

Merchymor · 25/05/2021 13:30

I like Ffion.
I live in England and know a Ffion here, everyone pronounces it properly (I'm Welsh and know a few back home too).

Fern just makes me think of the reality TV woman and I don't even watch her show.

ILoveShula · 25/05/2021 13:51

Fern makes me think of Fern Britten, which is good. Ffion makes me think of Ffion Hague, also good. Phoebe - Friends and Fleabag, and dare I say it, Phroebe/Phoeble Aldridge.

Ferne is the reality TV woman, I think, and Fearne is cotton. The extra letters seem to detract IMO.

Lemur12 · 25/05/2021 15:57

Thanks for your comments everyone. I really hadn't expected so many positive reactions to Ffion - it's definitely growing on me.
