Me again... So, I was pretty set on Phoebe and then I began warming to Fern again, and then someone suggested Ffion, which is basically halfway between them, and also a Welsh name, the same as dd1 (though we don't live in Wales) I'm going round in circles, please help me decide!

Ffion sounds best with your daughter's name I think. I know plenty of people in England with Welsh and Irish names.

DotDotDotDotDot · 25/05/2021 16:25

Fern is my favourite, such a lovely simple nature name. I like Phoebe too, although it is a good bit more popular than Fern, in case that bothers you? Sorry to be negative but fion is a rude word in French, so Ffion may not travel so well. I love Cerys and Eira for other Welsh girl name suggestions, good luck choosing.

I love Eira too, but I think it looses something without the rolled 'r' - I feel like it needs a Welsh accent. Cerys is also lovely, but I can't use it.

I've heard fion is a rude word in France. I'm not sure it bothers me that much. The spelling is different and people still call their kids Anais, Astrid, Lana, Fanny etc. - names which I think are much worse, in a similar vein....

I love Phoebe! I like Ffion too, I live in wales so know a few. Not really a fan of Fern but couldn’t pinpoint exactly why

partyatthepalace · 25/05/2021 20:22

Oh I lovely Ffion!

Phoebe and Fern are both nice, but I would absolutely go for Ffion,

DacwMamYnDwad · 25/05/2021 20:23

I'm with you OP. Ffion is pretty.

Eira is weirdly popular but sounds awful when says as Eyruh. Cerys (and Carys) seem middle-aged, and Cerys will be said as Serris or Cerise by some.

Fern might be one of those names that are nice if you only know one or two, but might be more popular than you think.

Nia is nice if pronounced correctly. Not keen on Nee-uh.

My good friend has a Ffion and a Lowri. I think it's lovely. Have you considered Flora?

funnyoldonion · 25/05/2021 20:41

Ffion is beautiful with Nia but then I'm Welsh so probably bias!

BrilliantBetty · 25/05/2021 20:42

I like all three of them Smile

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 25/05/2021 20:42

Phoebe! By a mile....

Doilooklikeatourist · 25/05/2021 20:43

There’s a new baby near us ( in Wales ) named Ffibi
The Welsh spelling of Phoebe apparently

Babydust13 · 25/05/2021 20:44

I love Phoebe

ladygindiva · 25/05/2021 20:46

LOVE ffion

Oh that's horrible... Sorry!!
Doilooklikeatourist · 25/05/2021 20:53

@Merchymor , I know 😫
The baby is gorgeous , but she’s got years ahead of her spelling out her name ( incorrectly IMHO )

Lowri is a sweet name, but DH disagrees and I think the pronunciation would be mangled...

Not keen on Flora I'm afraid, feels a bit frilly to me. Fflur is ok, but there's one in the family, though spelt Fleur.

Lowri will be mispronounced as Lowry in England. I worked with a Lowri from Wales who couldn't believe how many people in England couldn't pronounce or spell it properly, 'Lowerie' being a particularly amusing bastardisation.

I would stick with Phoebe over Ffibi and I say this as someone who loves a cymrified name. It's not as intuitive as Alys, Harri or Nansi for example.

Don't worry, I definitely wouldn't use Ffibi. Feeling pretty positive about Ffion at the moment 😊

Ffibi is a monstrosity! Looks like Fitbit.

DacwMamYnDwad · 26/05/2021 11:20

Ffibi would need to be Ffîbi, or it would sound like Fibby.
Phîbi might be better. Um, both are hideous.

Up to them, I suppose.

subbysammiexoxo · 27/05/2021 03:39

I think Nia and Fern goes the best and both are fairly straightforward to pronounce

xprincessxjanetx · 28/05/2021 23:20

I like Phoebe and Ffion but not keen on Fern

BettySuz · 01/06/2021 07:37

I love Ffion, I'd use it and I'm not Welsh! It goes great with your daughters name as well.
I also really like Phoebe. Fern seems a little dull compared to the others xx

queenatom · 01/06/2021 12:45

Love Ffion, such a pretty name. I used to work with one and she wasn't Welsh (I don't think?) and it didn't stand out as particularly incongruous. Also like Fern, not a huge fan of Phoebe but I think that's just because I know a few too many.
