My brother has chosen Gretel for his daughter....

Is this an okay name?
I am worried that she will be asked "Is your brother Hansel?" all her life...
It is not my fave name but I just want other's opinions

DD is Greta. We love it (big fan of stronger, less girly names) and get lots of compliments. Not quite as sold on Gretel due to the Hansel thing, but it’s not dreadful, could grow on me and I much prefer it to some of the currently trendy choices. The fairytale and Sound of Music associations are actually quite sweet IMO.

Also quite like Liesel/Liesl. And Scandi names are having a moment, so it could well be Germany’s turn next!

It’s pretty. Living in Germany, I know many Gretas and Gretchens, Gretel is a lovely variation.

It's like people referring to a Thomas the stank engine or Tom and Jerry for a boy.

It's not an offensive reference and a perfectly normal name. Anyone making a big deal out of this name needs to grow up, I wouldn't even think twice and quite like the name.

I know a Gretel in her 40's, great name. Nobody thinks anything of it, tbh.

I also have a super cool friend called Gretchen. She is a personal trainer in Malibu.

I wouldn't pick Gretel personally, but that's just me. Nowhere near as bad as Griselda. DF had a university mate whose sister was called the latter, and people were always laughing at him behind his back. Not nice. DF's mate was called Felix, so he got off fairly light tbf. Rare names seem to be a double-edged sword sometimes.

A previous college has a niece called Greta. That’s lovely too.

When I was a child my grandma had a few Greta friends - I’ve not met a young one.

The only Gretel I know is young, brilliant, funny and gorgeous so I associate it with someone wonderful.

My first thought was The Sound Of Music. Youngest Von Trapp child was Gretel. Its cute.

Our son has a unique name from a known duo. Whenever anyone mentions the other half I just laugh. It’s a lovely name. Also it’s not your child.
