My brother has chosen Gretel for his daughter....

Is this an okay name?
I am worried that she will be asked "Is your brother Hansel?" all her life...
It is not my fave name but I just want other's opinions

It wouldn't be my choice but not awful.

Also there is literally nothing you can do about it other than upset th by voicing a negative opinion. Leave them to it.

I've heard way worse imo - at least it's a well known name (if quite unusual/exotic in the UK). I do associate it very much with the fairytale, but it's not a negative association (and she can easily call herself Greta instead if she's bothered by Hansel comments).

It's lovely and I've a friend named Gretal.

And just to add quite frankly with some of the bizarre names and made up names around Gretel wouldn't be a name I'd worry about

I really like the name myself and know of a Gretel who goes by Gret. I wouldn't have thought Hansel and Gretel would be widely known about by kids these days?

It is horrendous, I have an horrendous name and get the same jokes over and over, it's tedious. Think of a good nickname.

I've known both a Liesel and Gretel. I think they're really pretty names.

Yes I did have a brother Hansel... once... but I can hardly remember him anymore sniffle! You've got the story all wrong, he was mauled by the Big Bad Wolf for eating sour grapes!

I've got a very normal, boring name that was made into a meme by a popular movie (think along the lines of Jen-naaaaay from Forrest Gump or Adriaaaaaannn from Rocky), and I quickly learned to respond with a joke and have a bit of fun with it. It's really not so bad!

Plus, Gretel is a pretty name, and she can go by whatever she wants. Greta, Gretz, G-Money, Queen-G, Greggs, Amanda... whatever she wants!

It's one of my choices. 😁

I was met with blank faces when the story came up at school, so I know none of my class know the story. It's more likely to be the adults who remember the story, unless Disney do a remake! I didn't say I didn't like the name, just that because it's a less known story I don't think school kids will be teasing her because of the name
