My dog is called Lyra, but then next doors dog has the same name as my husband, so I wouldn't let that bother you!

I prefer Lyra over Luna. Luna feels a bit hippy-dippy to me (not helped by the Harry Potter character I'm sure). Lyra feels like a stronger name.

They are both of their time and will date badly.

Laura or Lorna are much classier.

OppsUpsSide · 14/05/2021 20:38

I don’t think either go very well with Noah.

Lyra I see Lycra..
And Luna has become a very popular ddog name....
Sorry op...
Noah and Iris.

Lyra is a bit like Wendy in that it was a name created for a character in a book (as was Lorna as in Doone) and it's popularity comes entirely from there. The Kate Bush song is from the film. It's not quite been in use long enough to be a general name disassociated from its origins like Lorna and Wendy. I think the same is for Luna as well.

Are you attracted to them because of the references to books or because of their sky/astronomy link? I think there are prettier names that are less likely to date.

Of the two I much prefer Lyra (I know too many pets named Luna, plus the lunatic association). Though you might want to also consider similar Lara or maybe Lila - they feel a bit less "now" to me.

Lyra is beautiful! I have a little Lyra in my family and she's the best (I might be biased haha) it's not a made up name as a PP suggested.
it's the name of a star constellation which features in a story from greek mythology and where the Lyrid meteor shower gets it's name from :)
Luna is beautiful too

WaitinginVain · 14/05/2021 21:59

Luna is fine; Lyra is lovely.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 14/05/2021 22:00

Much prefer Lyra.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 14/05/2021 22:07

Not crazy about either....I assume Luna means moon which is fine, but I also can't help but think lunatic

Lyra looks like Lycra though not sure how to pronounce it. It's probably the better of the two
