Lyra sounds awufl- is it even a real name?

Luna is ok but quite chavvy.

20viona · 14/05/2021 15:04

Lyra

CeeceeBloomingdale · 14/05/2021 15:30

Lyra makes an ugly sound to my ear. Luna is mega popular and works best on kittens and puppies. Neither sit well with Noah.

stickygotstuck · 14/05/2021 15:34

They are both lovely, and I don't think there is much between them.

Have your chosen them for their literally references, their meaning?
(BTW Hmm at people saying names are chavvy. People maybe, but names?)

FWIW, I don't think names need to 'go' with each other. Not sure I understand the logic, really.

Chilldonaldchill · 14/05/2021 15:45

I like them both.
All the Lyras and Lunas I know are completely beautiful (and really lovely too).
I think both sound fine with Noah but Like probably edges it slightly for me.

Chilldonaldchill · 14/05/2021 15:46

Sorry Luna not Like!

Tinselandlights · 14/05/2021 15:48

I LOVE Lyra.

Luna is nice but Lyra has a bit more spirit, and there is an awesome Kate Bush song called Lyra!

rooarsome · 14/05/2021 15:50

Lyra is beautiful and rolls off the tongue. I'm not really a fan of Luna.

pattyparsnip · 14/05/2021 15:51

Yes I know of dogs with these names . I do like Lyra though.

BackforGood · 14/05/2021 15:53

I don't like either.

My eye just sees 'Lycra'
and my ear hears "Loon", as in "you loony" / twit / daft git sort of put down.

littlebillie · 14/05/2021 15:54

Luna is going to date quickly

adrianmolesmole · 14/05/2021 15:56

Love them both, but Lyra has the edge. I could be projecting from their book characters though.

Violetlavenders · 14/05/2021 15:57

How do you even pronounce Lyra? Leera?

I like Luna

Jelly4444 · 14/05/2021 15:59

Lyra is nicer in my opinion!

Chilldonaldchill · 14/05/2021 16:00

Lyra is LIE - ra

Cbeebiesrehab · 14/05/2021 16:04

Lyra is much nicer. I know a lot of cats and dogs called Luna so my mind automatically goes there, sorry!

DungeonKeeper · 14/05/2021 17:26

Isn’t Luna in the top ten most popular names for a dog?

TempsPerdu · 14/05/2021 17:42

Lyra is much nicer but they are both very faddy.

Happycat1212 · 14/05/2021 18:05

I don’t like Luna, reminds me of lunatic. Never understood it’s popularity.

Not keen on Lyra but it’s better.

Namechangedforthistoday · 14/05/2021 18:16

Sorry op, Luna is a pets name. I’m also not fond of Lyra. Think kids would have a field day calling her a liar all the time.

Somepeoplemightthink · 14/05/2021 18:45

Lie-ra or Leer-a?

Leytonladee · 14/05/2021 19:07

Both ok. Both very on trend though. How about Lara? More classic and less likely to sound dated in ten years.

luxurychocolate · 14/05/2021 19:09

Both sound like dog names to me.

Lauren
Lara
Leona
Leonie

Chilldonaldchill · 14/05/2021 19:26

Lots of comments on trendiness. I'm a bit surprised. The Lunas I know are between 9 and 15. The Lyras I know are between 10 and 24. Maybe the TV adaptation of His Dark Materials will have made a difference?

Chilldonaldchill · 14/05/2021 19:29

But yes according to darkgreener Luna is 36th must popular girl's name now (0.18% of all girls called that in 2019) and Lyra only 150th but rising. Interesting. I suspect naming trends are often a bit earlier in London where I am so we don't notice when they get super trendy across the whole country...
