Naming my daughter Atlas?

abbieamelia7 · 12/05/2021 00:09

I’m really starting to love Atlas for a little girl. Originally this was our boy name, and I still love it for a boy too. Could we use it for either gender? Big sister is Aurora.
Aurora and Atlas as sisters?

Not very nice for a boy; bloody awful for a girl.

Gullible2021 · 12/05/2021 04:51

It’s a really really awful name. Bad for a boy. Just horrible and cruel for a girl, especially in contract to Aurora. Talk about drawing the short end of the stick.

It’s a book for Geography (seriously think about how she’ll feel in Geography lessons) or the name of a miserable sod with the weight of the world on his back. Don’t do it.

Nancydrawn · 12/05/2021 05:23

Agree with most posters.

Atalanta (or more properly in Greek, Atalante) is fine in that direction. Atlanteia is another name from Greek mythology.

Other Greek mythology A names: Actaea, Arete, Athena and Artemis (obviously), Arsinoe, Asteria, etc.

But on another note, I really would try to avoid two A names--I like the idea of each of the people being named individually rather than in bulk.

ILoveStickers · 12/05/2021 08:09

Atalanta is a really cool Greek heroine with a similar sound.

Or a female Titan like Gaia could work. Aurora and Gaia would be really cute.

AgathaAllAlong · 12/05/2021 08:11

Call her Ayn!

Nonmaquillee · 12/05/2021 08:12

Sorry
It’s atrocious
She’ll get the piss taken endlessly at school

Seafog · 12/05/2021 08:14

Great name for a boy

Seafog · 12/05/2021 08:19

Angelica/Antigone/Athena/Aurilia/Autumn

cushioncovers · 12/05/2021 08:20

For a boy yes but it's too masculine for a girl imo

Yes. There's so many other names, just don't call a kid 'map book' or 'strongman'.
ErrolTheDragon · 12/05/2021 08:36

Aurora is lovely though, and pp have suggested other good names like Athens/ Athena.

Synchrony · 12/05/2021 08:36

Didn't you already ask this in March? I doubt opinions have changed.

Herja · 12/05/2021 08:42

Only makes me think of a man with the world on his shoulders.

Ivebeeninlockdowntoolong · 12/05/2021 08:45

Oh dear. Why do some parents want to saddle their children with such unsuitable names? I'm glad the OP has at least consulted MN for others' opinions before committing to it, and I hope the OP will reconsider based on the above advice.

Kitkat151 · 12/05/2021 08:51

Definately a boys name IMO

Tal45 · 12/05/2021 08:53

Aurora is beautiful - lights in the sky. Atlas - a bloke carrying the weight of the world or something to look countries up in. I'd definitely go for Athena or Atlanta.

AnnaSW1 · 12/05/2021 09:43

I only know it as a boys name

sibbys · 12/05/2021 10:22

Yeah why not

user1493494961 · 12/05/2021 10:44

Well to gauge reaction call yourself Atlas for a while and see how you feel.

LookItsMeAgain · 12/05/2021 11:10

No - she'll have the piss taken out of her for years.
Try again.

MooseMoose · 12/05/2021 11:22

Sorry OP but I think it's awful, even for a boy. Seems a bit try-hard to me and sounds very harsh. And I agree that I'd feel short changed if I was called Atlas and my sister was Aurora. Atlanta is similar but much nicer.

MadeOfStarStuff · 12/05/2021 11:28

I don’t like it even as a boys name but as a girls name it’s just awful!

Aurora is beautiful, surely there’s another beautiful girls name that you can find for DD2?!

Serpenta · 12/05/2021 11:45

I'd wonder if you were an Ayn Rand fan. I'd hate for anyone to think I was inspired by her.

Edenember · 12/05/2021 12:00

Sorry but I agree with pps. It’s too masculine for a girl, she’ll feel envious of Aurora and there is teasing potential. There’s been lots of other lovely suggestions that would go very well.

summersolstice43 · 12/05/2021 12:03

Thats just setting someone up to get bullied at school really.
