Louis?

Too Royal? Too French? 😂

Really struggling with boys names, the only other one I love is Rory, which I can't use.

What's the mumsnet view on Louis?

Would you automatically pronounce it Loo-ee, or Loo-is?

I think Charles and Camilla now have two grandsons called Louis.

That would put me off, but I’m a republican. Grin

crabette · 10/05/2021 14:17

😂 I don't mind the royals generally, just not sure if it sounds too pretentious with the connection!!

I've always liked the name (properly pronounced as loo-ee!) but have gone off it a bit with too many royal babies.

RickiTarr · 10/05/2021 14:23

I dunno. For most MNers it’s probably fine, but you’re clearly the type of woman to ask “Too Royal? Too French?”, so those are concepts or concerns in your head. So probably the answer is “yes”(?)

Of course, if that answer annoys you, then maybe the answer is “oui” after all. Grin

I’m just trying to cross Rory with Louis to suggest something constructive. Smile

RickiTarr · 10/05/2021 14:24

Oh I’ve confused yes and no, there. I’ll take myself off for a lie down. Ignore me. Grin

romdowa · 10/05/2021 14:26

I'd prefer the lewis pronunciation, people won't think its as royal /French as louie

DappledThings · 10/05/2021 14:52

I like it. Wouldn't ever pronounce it Lewis and would be very confused as to why anyone would name their child Louis if they meant Lewis.

LittleTiger007 · 10/05/2021 15:49

I like it. Cute name and not too royal.

emmathedilemma · 10/05/2021 15:58

I'd pronounce it Lou-ee, and spell it Lewis if you want to pronouncing like Loo-is

Jupiterstars · 10/05/2021 16:07

I love Louis, it’s on my list. Cute for baby/toddler/child but also a real name so it works for an adult! I wouldn’t say it’s too royal, I’d pronounce Lou ee

crabette · 10/05/2021 16:56

Oh I'd definitely pronounce it Loo-ee, just I'm curious as to if many people would pronounce it wrong!

OP posts:
stickygotstuck · 10/05/2021 16:57

It's just a name, but if would Lewis would be an acceptable alternative, OP?

spiderlight · 10/05/2021 17:01

My DH is a Louis and very occasionally someone will pronounce it Lewis. What annoys him far more is the numbe rof people who spell it 'Louie'.

LadyCatStark · 10/05/2021 17:04

Ruairi fits the bill!
chipsandgin · 10/05/2021 17:06

A lot of people will pronounce it wrong, trust me, even seemingly intelligent people like doctors and dentists.. (in part because Louis Smith the athlete pronounces his own name wrong..). If you can manage to it that let annoy the hell out of you for the next 18 years then go for it - it’s a brilliant name!

sarah13xx · 10/05/2021 19:00

I love Louis (Loo-ee to me)! Also love Rory. These were all in my top 10 choices but like you had reasons why I couldn’t use them 🤷🏼‍♀️

Flymetothestars · 10/05/2021 19:03

Loo - eee
Great name- stick with it!
One of my favourites
Much nicer than Rory which I don't like

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 10/05/2021 19:04

Louis, yes personally I think it’s very Royal and very French. I don’t dislike it though. I’d definitely pronounce it Loo eeee even though I have a nephew called Louis pronounced Lewis 🤷‍♀️😀

daisypond · 10/05/2021 19:09

Definitely not too royal or too French. If anything, it’s a common everyday classic name. Pronounced Loo-ee.

Violetlavenders · 10/05/2021 19:14

What annoys him far more is the numbe rof people who spell it 'Louie'

In the UK Louie is the more popular spelling I think.

Louis is pronounced Lou-is in Germany and possibly other countries outside of France.

The city St Louis is pronounced Lou-is too.

So yes, outside of France many people will say Lou-is.

Violetlavenders · 10/05/2021 19:15

I have a nephew called Louis pronounced Lewis

I know many boys and men called Louis who pronounce it phonetically as Lou-is.

YoureOnMute · 10/05/2021 19:16

I'm biased because I have a Louis (pronounced Loo-ee). We have encountered the "Lewis" pronunciation more often than I thought, however I'm fine with correcting people as that's not his name! If I wanted to call him Lewis, that's how I would have spelt it.

I still absolutely love the name and so glad I chose it for my son. It really suits him and like someone else said, I think it's lovely at all ages.

Lookdeepintotheparka · 10/05/2021 19:29

I like it - know quite a few boys called Louis, Lewis and Louie. Not always straightforward as one of the boys named Lewis is also pronounced Lou ee too!

Another option could be Lawrie/Laurie?

TatianaBis · 10/05/2021 19:54

I love it. It’s a shame that it’s been used by the British royal family - that definitely puts me off.

Louie is the new spelling for illiterates - it’s only become a thing.

Previously Louie was a dim of Louise.

TatianaBis · 10/05/2021 19:56

^ Only recently become a thing.
