My friend is considering calling her baby Bram. He will be known as Bram but she's wondering if he should be Abraham on the birth certificate.
Bram is actually the mn of my baby who died. I'm really touched that she wants to use it so for disclosure, I'm on the side of the short version.
What do you think?

If she's not ever going to use the longer version I'd go for jsut Bram on the BC. Lovely gesture to you and so sorry about your loss xx

I'd go for Bram. I don't see the point in naming a child something you never intend to call them.

I'm a fan of full names in general. But I think Bram is enough of a name (Bram Stoker?) that it's not just perceived as a nickname. And I think it's much nicer than Abraham as well!

I knew a Bram but it was short for Bramwell so if she wanted a longer name but not Abraham that could be an option.

I love Bram, it was on our list but ended up with a DD. I like it as a stand-alone name, though there is also Abram if Abraham is a little serious but your friend would like a longer version.

I like both but would probably go for Abraham to give more options

I would just go Bram, I prefer it when a diminutive starts with the same letter as the BC name as it avoids initial confusion.

Love Bram - one of fave uncommon boys names. I think that Bram stands up very well as a given name in it's own right (it's very popular in the Netherlands for example, although I think it's pronounced slightly differently).

Abraham is nice enough, but because Abraham isn't very common now, I don't think that many people would be aware that Bram is a shorting or make the assumption that Bram has a longer name (it's not like Tom vs Thomas or Sam vs Samuel for example).

My nn for DS during my pregnancy was Bram. For Bramley apple. Because he began as the size of a "pip". I liked the name so much that I wanted to call him Bram when he was born but H wasn't in favour.

Bram Stoker was actually Abraham, but I think these days it’s common to have “nicknames” on birth certificates, so I think it’s fine.

I would just stick with Bram on the birth certificate.

I love the name Bram. But I do like having a full name alternative.
And Abraham is a cool name.
If you like the nn and manin name to start with same letter, then I think Bramwell, as mentioned up thread is a very cool name, and seems closer to Bram somehow.

I'd stick to the original if it's meant as a tribute. Plus middle names are rarely used so I don't really see the argument about giving the child options (I do see that argument for the first name that they'll be known by but not middle names). Plus I like Bram.

I'm usually all for the full name, but not this time. Bram is fantastic, and Abraham, while nice, isn't as good - and if he's Abraham, there's a good chance he'll choose/end up as Abe, which is so totally different... and I imagine your friend will be gutted.

You can't control nicknames/short forms, so if she wants a Bram, just call him that.
