I would have said Savannah if you asked this the other week. However, DH and I were watching a show and there was a character named Savannah. I said to my h what a lovely name, soft sounding and easy to say, conjures soft/sweet thoughts snd he said, “yeah, good pole dancer/stripper name”. Interesting conversation after that! But he spoiled that name for me and I’ll think pole dancer/stripper

My little girl is Esmé pronounced like your spelling

idrinkchocolatemilk · 03/05/2021 06:50

I know a girl called Savannah and her full name is never used that just call her Sav which is a shame because it’s such a beautiful name

Violetlavenders · 03/05/2021 07:40

My little girl is Esmé pronounced like your spelling

See I would pronounce Esmé as Es-mé (long eh). There's no ay sound imo.

The op wants Esmae/Esmay, I think.

Edenember · 03/05/2021 11:07

É (acute accent) in French is pronounced more or less ay, so this is correct.

Violetlavenders · 03/05/2021 11:28

No é is not actually pronounced like ay in French. It is pronounced somewhere between “e” in “bet” and “ee” in “see”

That’s not right. It’s much closer to an ay or eh sound.
Violetlavenders · 03/05/2021 11:47

I'm saying that é is NOT pronounced as ay.

Esmé is not Esmay in French

Edenember · 03/05/2021 12:49

@Violetlavenders nope. É (acute) is ay or as good as. You’re thinking of the grave accent è (eh) .

Teeshirt · 03/05/2021 12:51

@Violetlavenders

I'm saying that é is NOT pronounced as ay.

Esmé is not Esmay in French

But it is pronounced as ey/eh, more or less.
MumofSpud · 03/05/2021 12:54

I have an Esme (pronounced Ez-May), I quite like the way you want to spell it!

CirqueDeMorgue · 03/05/2021 12:54

There's something about the look of 'esme' that I dislike.

Teeshirt · 03/05/2021 13:01

Esmé (male) and Esmée (female) are pronounced with a -may sound at the end, more or less. Esme in English could be -mee or -may (parental preference).

Violetlavenders · 03/05/2021 13:46

É (acute) is ay or as good as. You’re thinking of the grave accent è (eh) .

No, é is definitely not pronounced ay in French. It may be how English speakers pronounce it!

And no, I'm not thinking of è!

Savannah

ladygindiva · 03/05/2021 13:49

Gofor Savannah op, I think this thread has proved that although pretty, Esme can be a controversial name 🤣🤣🤣🤣

ladygindiva · 03/05/2021 13:50

I know of a Savannah who is nn Savvy, which I think is fabulous x

SusannahSophia · 03/05/2021 13:51

Esme

Edenember · 03/05/2021 13:56

@Violetlavenders we’ll have to agree to disagree on this. Regardless then, English speakers are what we’re dealing with in this instance. I can understand OP wanting a spelling where there is zero ambiguity, but I think the spelling itself will bring other problems as it’s non-standard.

RickOShay · 03/05/2021 22:00

Savannah is nicer anyway Grin
