Hi -simple question - if you heard the name Dara would you think it was a boy or girl? It may help if you said whether you were in the UK (I am). Thanks for your time x

Boy
I'm in England and have only ever heard it for Dara O'Briain which is why I'd say boy.

I think, without having heard of him, and hearing it out of the blue, it sounds more likely to be a girl's name Grin

MattyGroves · 29/04/2021 19:55

Girl. UK.

I would also assume Indian origin spelled Dhara, never heard it as a boys name

Boy - from Dara O’Brien, England

Dana is a girls name,

Pemba · 29/04/2021 21:34

I know it's an Irish boys' name which should be pronounced with a short 'a:, sort of to rhyme with' sparrer' IYKWIM. Is that right? But I always hear Dara O'Brien (surname sp?) being pronounced by English people as 'Dah-ra'. Even by Brian Cox! It must drive him nuts yet he never corrects them! Not that hard to say really, is it?

Having said that, there is probably also an unrelated girls name Dara, pronounced Dah-ra. Maybe American?

But my first thought would be male, from Dara O'B.

romdowa · 29/04/2021 21:43

I'm Irish and I know it can be used for both genders but its more commonly used for boys. I know a few girls called Dara but its spelled daire

Spied · 29/04/2021 21:45

Girl. I'm in UK.
I'd assume there were American connections as I think of it as an American type of name.

PattyPan · 29/04/2021 21:46

I would think boy, like Dara O’Briain. I’m in SE England.
