Thoughts on Aimée/Amy

Hello,
DH and I have finally decided on a name for our little girl but can’t decide on the spelling. What are your thoughts on Aimée vs Amy?
We like the name as it is recognisable but not used very often these days!
Any thoughts on the name are welcome as well as similar suggestions :)

Amy. Simple and classic. Lovely to meet children with this name, but overused in the eighties!

I have an Amy so obviously think it’s a great name. We liked the fact it was short but two syllables and wouldn’t generally have an obvious shortening (though she has occasionally had friends call her Ames).

We thought we had chosen the most common spelling (so less likely to have to continually spell it out) but in her year at primary school there was also an Aimee so maybe not. But in my view, assuming you are in the UK, better to not have a name with an accent as will frequently have to both say “with an accent on the e” and then use hand gestures to explain which way the accent goes - or at least that was the experience of a colleague.

I like Amy and I would spell it that way otherwise your child will spend their life correcting people (I have a name that's unisex but spelt different for male/female....9 times out of 10 it gets spelt wrongGrin)

Amy is a lovely name

My name has an unusual spelling and it's a nuisance to be honest! I'd just go with Amy because my name was always spelled wrong on school reports, etc when I was a kid and it really annoyed me.

Spied · 20/04/2021 09:54

Amy

ILoveShula · 20/04/2021 09:55

Amy. Simple and classic. Not keen on Ames, but all names get shortened or lengthened.

TatianaBis · 20/04/2021 09:56

Much prefer Aimée both the spelling and pronunciation (Amay).

Amy is dull and dated.

murbblurb · 20/04/2021 09:58

Unless you are in France, a life of spelling it out and finding an accent on a keyboard will be really annoying. Amy.

Amy

Amy

Starburst8 · 20/04/2021 10:03

I like the spelling Aimee without the accent.

kokosm · 20/04/2021 10:04

Amy - if you'd like it spelled Aimee and pronounced Amy, the accent would make it sound different.

Inastatus · 20/04/2021 10:05

I’ve got an Amy - I love the name obviously Smile

KitKatBunny · 20/04/2021 10:07

Amy. Friends recently used it for their little girl and it was nice to hear such a lovely classic name being used.

BeesAnkles · 20/04/2021 10:10

@Starburst8

I like the spelling Aimee without the accent.
This. What purpose does the accent serve? By including the accent, I assume that it would be pronounced as the French for loved: /em-ay/.

If you want the "Amy" pronunciation, I'd recommend removing the accent.

Amdone123 · 20/04/2021 10:13

Amy. It's beautiful.

Ilikecheeseontoast · 20/04/2021 10:15

I like Aimee. I've also seen it spelt Amie.

MajorNeville · 20/04/2021 10:17

Amy.

Cakeandslippers · 20/04/2021 10:18

Amy.

I wanted my son to be Amy if he was a girl. .. though I had to rethink it when I realised it was an anagram of his/her sister's name 🙈

Violetlavenders · 20/04/2021 10:20

Aimée sounds beautiful in French.

Crustybreadandbutter · 20/04/2021 10:21

Amy

AnyaMoondial · 20/04/2021 10:22

Amy. It is a good name.

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 20/04/2021 10:23

Amy is lovely. Simple, pretty and classic.

A-may with the accent is a bit try-hard if you're not french. Lots of people including me, won't know how to spell it or write the accent.

RoseDog · 20/04/2021 10:25

I have an Aimee and she has to spell it all the time but I still prefer it to Amy, she is 18 and there was always at least one other Amy/aimee she knew at school and clubs.

UnprecedentedPoster · 20/04/2021 10:26

@Cakeandslippers you have a child called Yam?! Shock Wink

I like Amy! And as an 80s kids, I actually only knew one, despite its reputed popularity. I think it's simple yet different. Do it!
