Sibling for Lucy?
CaptainWentworth · 15/04/2021 09:40
I’m only 18 and a bit weeks, but we really struggled deciding on said Lucy’s name, so i think it will take us (me) from now until full term to make our minds up!
We hadn’t found out if we were having a boy or a girl, so we had sort of shortlists for both, but then she didn’t seem to look like any of the girl names (she is strawberry blonde and they all seemed like dark haired girls!) so we decided on Lucy (which hadn’t been on the shortlist) in a hurry in the end when we were discharged from hospital, mainly because my parents were getting antsy about her not having a name after 3 days 🙄
I do like the name and it suits her, but really I would have liked to choose something very slightly more interesting, although still classic and not likely to date too much. I also feel like I now need to go for something super conventional for number 2 otherwise it’ll seem weird!
Our surname is a very common one but is 3 syllables, so I’m a bit wary of longer first names to avoid giving the poor child a mouthful to learn when they’re little.
I am probably going to find out the sex this time, but would love some ideas to be going on with. I’ll list some names I kind of like below, but I’m totally open to suggestions- I think part of the problem last time was the we didn’t really love any particular names, just liked quite a few. Also it seems like such a huge responsibility to name a child!
Felix
Hector (I know this is divisive, but my dads side of the family was Scottish and this was my grandpa’s name - I like it a lot but not sure I dare really use it!)
Angus (was Hector’s brother)
Hamish (an ex colleague used this as she thought it worked in the nursery and the boardroom, and I can see her point)
James
Henry
George (last three too boring?)
Annabel
Clementine
Beatrice
Clara
Sophie
Violet/Viola
Ivy
Ottilie (but possible silly nickname with our surname)
Margot (Lucy’s middle name is Margaret after my mum, so might be odd?)
Cecelia/Celia (patron saint of music, which is significant to me)
Constance
Nancy
Flora
Iris
Sylvie (almost used this last time but chickened out)
Eva
Philippa (Pippa)
Claudia

I like all your boys names. Less keen on Felix and love Angus and Hamish. I think James, Henry and George are classics, as is Lucy.
Most of your girl's names are ok, I'm not a huge fan of Ottilie, Philippa or Cecelia. I'm not sure I like Lucy and Sylvie together?
Aliceandthemarchhare · 15/04/2021 09:49
Ds was going to be a Lucy if he’d been a girl he is a Benjamin, if that helps.
I do really like all your boys names, in fact, although not sure about Scottish names when not in Scotland.
I like flora and Sophie best out of your girls names. I think some are lovely but a bit more unusual so don’t go quite as well with Lucy.
CaptainWentworth · 15/04/2021 09:50
No I agree about Lucy and Sylvie - in fact I am a bit wary of anything ending with an ‘ie’ sound for fear of sounding a bit matchy matchy.
Meant to say, Violet is also a family name on DH’s side and that was in the shortlist last time too.
Hope we are having a boy, will be easier!
CaptainWentworth · 15/04/2021 09:51
I’m not sure about Scottish names either- my maiden name was very Scottish but although I would qualify to play sport for Scotland, I was born in Lancashire!
Recycledblonde · 15/04/2021 10:02
If it helps I have a Lucy, her brother is Nicholas, has always been known as Nick. It never crossed my mind about the names going together, after all they are individuals not a permanent pair. Their names belong to them alone.
My only criteria were that the initials didn’t spell anything rude, nothing too outlandish and the normal shortened forms were reasonably nice.
Tbh after the initial ‘ what a lovely name’ I don’t think anyone cares or thinks about your children’s names they just become that individuals name.
Lemonlemon88 · 15/04/2021 10:06
I really like Lucy and Cecilia. Clara and Annabel are also lovely.
James is a great name. Lucy and Angus is nice, not sure about the others.
Lucy and Max
Lucy and Alec
Lucy and Jasper
Aliceandthemarchhare · 15/04/2021 10:10
I don’t think that names have to match like polly and molly or similar but i do think it can be a little bit problematic when siblings have different ‘types’ of names - my brother got a name that was one of the most popular for boys in the 70s/80s while I got stuck with one of the most obscure names ever!
ripprincephilip · 15/04/2021 10:21
I have a Hector and I always get lovely remarks on his name and how it's so original and cool etc. So I say go for it
AvonCallingBarksdale · 15/04/2021 10:25

My favourites from your lists are James, Clara, Cecilia, Pippa and Iris. All gorgeous!
DotDotDotDotDot · 15/04/2021 10:39
I like Felix best from your boys list. Although a Scottish name would be nice too, Hamish sounds interesting in a good way to me. I prefer your shorter girls names with a different ending sound to Lucy, so Violet, Clara and Iris are all great.
Junebabe · 15/04/2021 10:49
From your list, i like George for a boy and Clara for a girl.
Other suggestions...
Lucy and Juliet
Lucy and Seren
Lucy and Esther
Lucy and Elio
Lucy and Sampson
Lucy and Zeke
BlueChampagne · 15/04/2021 10:56

AvonCallingBarksdale · 15/04/2021 16:12
So many lovely names here . If I wasn’t an ancient, I’d be tempted to have a few more DC to use some of these.
CaptainWentworth · 10/08/2021 15:08
Hello - reanimating this thread as I’m now 35 weeks and we know we’re having another girl!
Our current favourite name combo is Flora Beatrix (Flora Bea) although we probably won’t decide finally until she’s here.
Is Flora becoming too popular? I always liked it but DH wasn’t sure, and now he’s changed his mind and seems pretty keen.
Could also go for Beatrix as a first name. The other two I still like are Annabel and Violet, but not as much.
What do you reckon?
ellenpartridge · 10/08/2021 15:35
Lucy and Flora is fab. If popularity is a concern, Flora seems much less popular than your other options of Annabel and Violet. My village is certainly rammed full of little Annabels (though I do like the name!) and I know quite a few Violets born in the last couple of years. Only come across one Flora who is a fair bit older.
finallychangedmyusername · 10/08/2021 18:00
