Baby Boy - Isaac, Luke, Rory or Thomas

It's taken DH and I a long time to come up with names for DS2, due soon. For DS1, we only had one name we absolutely loved and so was an easy choice - Max.

For DS2, we've narrowed down to:

Isaac
Luke
Rory
Thomas

What order of preference would you have for these names? Any other suggestions (although we've been looking at names so long we have probably already decided against them)? Surname is Smith.

TIA

Smith is a very common (popular) surname, so a more unusual first name might help to better identify your ds. Eg there will be hundreds of Tom Smiths out there...

Isaac is the least common. Or how about
Conrad
Vincent
Raphael

I would also be cautious about using an ultra-popular first name like Thomas with a very, very common surname, so would lean toward the others, all of which are excellent names.

Fnib · 21/03/2021 15:39

Thomas
Rory
Isaac
Luke
Would be my order of preference. I don't think it's true that there are hundreds of (say) Tom Smiths at every school.
All nice names Smile

@Violetlavenders- Not much we can do about Smith, but it has put me off what were all my favourite boys names before I got married (James, William etc) because they are just too common. Thomas is very borderline for me on the "too common" front.

Funny that you say Isaac is the least common - looking at ONS data for 2019, it's actually second most popular out of the four. Luke is by far the least common, scraped in to the top 100, but when combined with trendy Lucas and Luca would probably be higher!

Conrad - sounds way too American oil baron to my ear - don't know why!
Vincent - Not a fan of Vinnie (makes me think of East-end gangster nicknames Reggie, Ronnie etc) and think the full name falls into the "old man" trend, which I also struggle with.
Raphael - Whilst it's nice that it's unusual, I really can't imagine someone getting away with this outside of London / unless they had Mediterranean heritage.

Not really sure what our style is annoyingly!

Having a common name like Tom Smith has its advantages in the internet age as it makes it harder for people to find you online. That's usually a good thing!

I like all your names except Rory as that is "trendy" to me whether as your others have a more classic feel

If you're wanting a solid name that's not too popular how about something like Laurence or Peter or Matthew?

Hufflepuffsunite · 21/03/2021 15:51

I work in a school and William is far less popular than Tom! I'd put that back in the mix and it would be my top choice. Second favourite is Rory.

AdaColeman · 21/03/2021 15:54

Rory and Luke are my favourites.

Isaac & Thomas are perfectly nice names, but Isaac is a bit biblical for my taste and Thomas Smith doesn't have much sparkle about it.

Watchingthetelly · 21/03/2021 16:09

All lovely names, I like Thomas the least though.

bonfireheart · 21/03/2021 16:38

Isaac
Luke
Thomas
Rory

DramaAlpaca · 21/03/2021 16:39

In order of preference: Rory, Luke, Thomas... then Isaac a long way further down.

Thedogscollar · 21/03/2021 17:02

Rory by a country mile. Sounds lovely with Max.
Rory Smith. Love it.

TatianaBis · 21/03/2021 17:18

Rory by a long way

sarah13xx · 21/03/2021 17:20

1.Rory
2.Thomas
3.Luke
4.Isaac

Peachbubble · 21/03/2021 17:49

I'd go with Rory. Thomas would be my second choice.

Clockingon · 21/03/2021 18:01

Isaac - 1
Luke- 4
Rory-3
Thomas - 2

JellyBellySmith · 21/03/2021 18:06

@Hufflepuffsunite - William is a family name and will probably be a middle name. As much as I loved it before, can't get away with naming my child "Will Smith"!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts - keep them coming! I probably like Rory best - as some have said I think it's lovely with my other son's name too, but we are still debating!

I really like Rory, especially as your surname is Smith - would be nice to have a more interesting first name. Thomas is a good solid name. Not keen on Luke, though Lucas is quite nice. Dislike Isaac - would prefer Zachary / Zach. How about Rowan, Reuben, Henry, Aidan, Angus?

partyatthepalace · 21/03/2021 18:12

Luke - really like it. Don’t think too popular?
Rory - love it but getting super popular
Issac - like it but goes less well with smith
Thomas - like it but bit dull with smith

Guy, Nathaniel nn Nat/Nate, Alistair, Franklin nn Frank, Jesse, Jethro, Elijah nn Eli, Joel, Jude

itsgettingwierd · 21/03/2021 18:40

My son is Thomas but Issac was also on my list!

Other 2 are ok too so I'm not much help but I'd go with Thomas or Issac.

Pro a sky Thomas because it's easier to say with Max Grin

itsgettingwierd · 21/03/2021 18:41

Or how about Lucas instead of Luke?

My nephew is called that!

Spied · 21/03/2021 18:42

Thomas
Isaac
Luke

Rory

ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHave · 21/03/2021 18:56

Love Luke or Luka (don’t like Lucas=mucas)
then Rory.
Isaac is ok.
Thomas last as I think it’s too popular. I know one in every year group at DDs school.

Hufflepuffsunite · 21/03/2021 18:58

@JellyBellySmith you probably could, actually. Kids these days have no idea who he is! 🤣 It's a lovely middle name then. Rory William has a nice ring to it.
