Traditional boys name, for a girl

Sixofseven · 20/03/2021 10:16

Just wondering how mean it would be to give a girl a name which is traditionally for boy, like Matthew or Michael. Does anyone here (an adult woman) have a boys name and what was it like as a name? Did it embarrass you growing up?
I’d like to name my daughter after a male family member but it’s not a unisex name and I don’t want to make her struggle as my other daughter has a very feminine name.
TIA

It means blood in the poo.

FFS it does not. It sounds a little bit like melæna which does mean poo in the blood but outside MN most people who are not HCPs would not know that or made the connection.

Plenty will.

Sorry op I'm with the majority no.
Malcolm is a really heavy male name often it gets shortened to Malky I just can't imagine a girl or even a 40 yo woman with it.

Malcomina - shortened to Ina or Mima?
Use the list initial - Melony?

Does Malcolm have a loving wife with a nice name? Middle name thats more unisex?

Boys Registers at school (subsequent laughing as many were in my class from a very young age and it always happened, it was upsetting when I was really young, there was a song.....Blush).

Constant 'How's that spelt?
Isn't that a boys name?
Did your parents want a boy?
I've never heard a girl/woman called...
'Dear Mr' letters, forever,
'Can I speak to Mr' phone calls, '
'Are you signing on behalf of Mr....'

Also people always getting it wrong and feminising which results in having to go over most of the above.....

(FWIW my mum did want a boy.....)

So, no, I wouldn't

Mally is a lovely name - I know an adult one.

Or you could think a bit more creatively. Malcolm means follower of Saint Columba, so how about Columba? It's used as a girl's name and comes from the Latin for dove.

Lockdownbear · 22/03/2021 13:43

Never heard of a Mally but Molly would work as close enough.

KirstenBlest · 22/03/2021 13:46

Mali (prounced Mally) is the Welsh form of Molly, and is quite popular.
The actor who plays Natasha in The Archers is one.

I had a relative who had a VERY traditional male name.
Apparently it caused quite the stir (in the press!) when her wedding band were announced in the early 60’s.

Penguin81 · 22/03/2021 13:51

I think there us an actress named malandra, after her parents

pennylane83 · 22/03/2021 13:52

Also, no one does it the other way round - not many boys called Sophie or Lucy

Plenty of males with the name of Lindsay or Kelly though.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/03/2021 13:55

Plenty will.

Yep - just about all HCPs - who will snigger internally every time she goes for a checkup or contacts them - as well as lots of other non-HCPs (including me).

Also, it doesn't sound a little bit like it - most people would pronounce both words almost identically. Maybe it's just me, but if I could choose one of 25,000 names for my baby that didn't sound like a medical problem involving poo, or one name that did - I think I'd just err on the majority safe side....

Ginfilledcats · 22/03/2021 14:01

I have a name that is incredibly similar for boys/girls. And the usual nickname is the same for both (think Nicola/Nicholas nn Nick)

I absolutely hated it. I was jealous of girls with lovely effeminate girly pretty names (when I was growing up it was Emma's and Emily's and Amy's and I was SO jealous they had pretty names.

I also got teased from about year 4-9 for the name as I was tallest in my class, and good at sports and enjoyed them (despite being quite girly) and got a lot of man/boy jokes etc.

My DDs name is very girly.

AnaofBroceliande · 22/03/2021 14:21

How about you change your name to Malcolm, OP, since you love it so much.

YoniAndGuy · 22/03/2021 14:26

I love the name Malcolm! But no, not for a girl. Malley is lovely as is Mal.

Malka?
Malvolia is shortened to Mally
Malin is a Scandinavian girl name.

Some options there maybe?

Lockdownbear · 22/03/2021 14:38

@pennylane83

Plenty of males with the name of Lindsay or Kelly though.

Kelly and Lindsay are both surnames, which straight away makes them male names.

But the 'y' ending makes them soft enough to be used as female first names but they would both be considered male names.

mediciempire · 22/03/2021 14:44

I really hope you don't name her Malcolm. It's not nice for a girl at all. Mac is sometimes a nickname for Malcolm, you could use that. I quite like boys names as middle names for girls sometimes e.g. Rosalie Malcolm, Lily Malcolm, Evelyn Malcolm, Beatrice Malcolm, Jennifer Malcolm, Alice Malcolm all sound quite nice but Malcolm as a first name will not.

Laureatus · 22/03/2021 21:45

Probably not a goer, but in Scotland it used to be common to slap 'ina' on the end of any man's name to make it feminine (I think esp after WWI when people wanted to commemorate men who didn't come home). So as well as the classics like Georgina, Thomasina, Edwina, you get quite unusual ones like Malcolmina. You could allide that into Mina? My mum's cousin is called Rena (pron Reena) which was originally a nickname for Georgina.

TatianaBis · 22/03/2021 21:47

Malin and Malandra are pretty.

RedcurrantPuff · 22/03/2021 21:52

I don’t think a girl with a sister with a very feminine name would thank you for calling her Malcolm.

It would work as a middle name as it can also be a surname and plenty of females have surnames as middle names.

Otherwise maybe something like Mala, Malca, Col, might work

mathanxiety · 22/03/2021 22:00

I know two girls with very male middle names, Michael and Paul. That's the place to put them imo.

Both are family surnames from their mothers' sides but obv not every random person would guess that.

GarnOut · 22/03/2021 22:00

DD has a name that can be shortened to a male name. We called her by that until she got to around 7 when she decided she didn’t like it and we added some letters to the end to make it sound more feminine. In adulthood she still loathes being called by the male shortening . I’m the only one who she tolerates doing it (I try not to but it’s so ingrained in my mind i sometimes forget ).

mathanxiety · 22/03/2021 22:02

You should not use the name Malcolm as a first name for a girl. The 'colm' syllable is pronounced in a very unfortunate way.

RedCheese · 22/03/2021 22:20

Mali: it's the Welsh word for Molly which means wished-for child.
