Violet - Sister for Joseph & Charlie

We are about to have our third baby, it is going to be a girl. She has two big brothers, called Joseph (3 years old) & Charlie (nearly 2).

We have been planning on calling her Violet, as we love the name and have been so settled on calling her it.

Recently someone made the association with Charlie & the Chocolate factory, which we had already known about with Violet but it never clicked with us that we would have Charlie and Violet which are both out of the film, and also ‘Grandpa Joe’ is in it.

Would you hear our children’s names and think Charlie and the Chocolate factory straight away and think we’d used the film for inspiration?

We definitely haven’t and are gutted we may not be able to use ‘Violet’ anymore, but just wanted to gather some thoughts/suggestions before it’s too late!

Thanks

Love Violet, would never think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! I think of Violet from the Incredibles... Is that what its called? That cute movie about the superhero family. And she is cool!

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 15/03/2021 11:41

Actually cant for the life of me remember there being a Violet in CATCF?

HarkAVagrant · 15/03/2021 11:45

I have to admit I immediately thought Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for Charlie and Violet, but not for Joseph. I wouldn't have thought that you were inspired by it though, or that you were going to work your way through the characters and call your next child Augustus! I would just assume you liked names of a particular era/ stamp.

Tal45 · 15/03/2021 11:52

Lola would be much worse IMO as in Charlie and Lola! I saw the names and didn't think of CATCF at all. I think Violet is a lovely name x

DotDotDotDotDot · 15/03/2021 12:10

Violet is a gorgeous name, would definitely be on my list if I have another Dd. I wouldn’t have made the connection to CATCF and it was one of my favourite films when I was a kid! I say go for it, just don’t mention the connection to anyone IRL, Good luck!

FluWorldOrder · 15/03/2021 12:25

Just use it! It’s fine! Or Violetta if you’re that worried but honestly no one will make this connection. And even if they did who cares, it really makes no difference what people think. Violet is beautiful!

ViolaValentina · 15/03/2021 12:27

Go for Viola instead Grin

User27aw · 15/03/2021 12:34

My first thought was the Krays.

sundowners · 15/03/2021 13:49

The Krays?? Seriously- why?

My first thought is simply it's a gorgeous name, beautiful/sweet on a girl and graceful on a woman. Go for it.

HummusAndCarrotSticks · 15/03/2021 13:53

Totally fine! I know that book quite well and it didn't even occur to me till I read your op.

Knitterbabe · 15/03/2021 14:33

My first thought was Violet Elizabeth from Just William stories.
I don’t like it.

espressoontap · 15/03/2021 14:38

I have a DD called Violet, she's 6 months. It's a lovely name IMO Wink

partyatthepalace · 15/03/2021 14:51

No!

I love C and the chocolate factory and I wouldn’t have thought of it. Also Charlie and Violet are both popular names right now so any association will be weak. Violet is lovely and goes well w the other two -

hazandduck · 15/03/2021 14:54

My first thought when I hear the name Violet is always of Violet Bick, and she rocks!

Sorry but it was my first thought when I read your thread title before I clicked on it to read your post.

MuddleMoo · 15/03/2021 17:10

But don't let that stop you using it!

MuddleMoo · 15/03/2021 17:12

She eats the gum and turns blue I think.

Charlie Kray and Violet Kray. Just the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the names.
CabernetSoWhat · 15/03/2021 17:51

Eh? I know Ronnie & Reggie Kray. Who the hell are Violet & Charlie Kray? Confused

Now you've pointed out the C&TCF connection, I can see it, but I think it's a sweet (no pun intended) connection and not obvious enough to be a problem. Verruca might have tipped it over the edge, but I think you're fine with Violet.

RichPetunia · 15/03/2021 19:04

Didn’t make the connection at all and I must have watched that film 10,000 times when my daughter was young. Lovely names, especially Violet.

Wiredforsound · 15/03/2021 19:10

For once in a baby name thread you have almost unanimous approval. Violet is a beautiful name and works really well with your boys names.

popcorndiva · 15/03/2021 19:19

Violet Elizabeth ....she will scream and scream until she is sick

Next would be Violet from CATCF

But I do like the name

NCPJC · 15/03/2021 19:59

Thanks everyone for the comments! It has reassured us a lot.

It’s a strange one, we never thought of the connection until someone recently did, and then when you think about it you always make it a bigger issue in your head than what it actually is

I remember Violet Beauregard because she is such an fun, typically unpleasant/annoying Dahl character - but I think it's a stretch to worry about the association with the names (simply because Charlie and Joseph are such well used names and I think the Grandpa Joe reference is a slightly more obscure anyway).

I must admit though I'm not keen on Violet compared to lovely Joseph and Charlie - it's too close to Violent for me in look and sound. If you aren't sure, what about Viola or Iris?

finallychangedmyusername · 16/03/2021 10:49

I'm currently reading CATCF with DS1... and still I didn't twig about the names matching the book. Grin

Violet is gorgeous, go for it!
