Kevin?

I’ve name changes as this might be outing. DP really wants to name our little boy Kevin after his grandad who passed a month ago. I know the name isn’t well liked on here but it means a lot to DP and his grandad was a lovely man to be named after. The more I think about it the more I actually like it, I think it sounds nice. He was considering Kevin as a middle name but as I say the more I think about it the more I like it for a first name I also am thinking a nickname could be Vin/Vinny if he doesn’t like his name as he gets older. I was just wondering what everyone thinks and whether we should go for it or not?

I don’t mind it and there are lots of famous Kevins that I think there’s not an obvious connection with one. Also, although dated there are some famous young Kevins like the footballer Kevin de Bruyne.

I know a 12 year old Kevin. I suppose when I first met him I thought it was an unusual name for a younger person, but now I don't think anything of it. It's just like any other name. He's not been picked on at school for it, although I think where he lives in the UK he's not the only person under 25 to be called it, there's at least one or two others.

@Worknoplay

OP, not to offend but have you thought about how your DS will feel about this name in years to come? He will probably be laughed at, called Kevin the Carrot, be told that it's an old fashion name.

I really don't like it at all. Think about how he'd feel, not your and your DP.

Lovely as a middle name, loads of kids have middle names that are associated with a family member, but not as his first name.

Hmm
SmeleanorSmellstrop · 17/03/2021 11:53

Noooo it's awful!!! You'll struggle to get Vinnie as a nn, doesn't matter what you call him at home, when he goes to school he will be Kev. It's so dated and ugly. Sorry.

Thedogscollar · 17/03/2021 16:54

@SmeleanorSmellstrop
Ugly is a tad OTT. It's hardly that.

sharpstick · 17/03/2021 17:08

No way. I’d go for it as a middle name or just use Vinny which I think is lovely. Though I realise there is mass snobbery around using nicknames as full names. Kevin’s to me are middle aged, it doesn’t sound old enough to have gone full circle yet like names such as Harry, Edward, Arthur etc.

rainywindow · 17/03/2021 17:09

My little boy is going to be Kevin, it’s a family name. I think it’s a really nice name if you forget about it being ‘dated’

eggandonion · 17/03/2021 17:26

It wouldn't have worked with my surname, but I think it is a lovely name. Good luck with all the baby boys!

Firebird83 · 18/03/2021 00:36

I quite like Kevin!

Lalliella · 18/03/2021 00:43

I like it. It’s kind of post-ironic now I reckon.

SilverStory · 18/03/2021 00:54

I know a baby Kevin and it's lovely.

Also know babies/young kids with names mentioned here... Alan, Gavin, Paul, Peter, Stephen, Michael, Denis. No matter how uncommon, all become normal very quickly.

theyoungishman · 18/03/2021 01:10

We need to talk about Kevin...

en0la · 18/03/2021 01:18

We need to talk about Kevin ...so no!

There was a lovely wee boy at ds3's old school, much younger than him, called Kevin. His parents had moved here from a different country a few years previously and wanted a traditional English name.

So even if the English themselves don't like it maybe it's appreciated and carried on by those coming into the country. I think it's a bonny name anyway and it will soon become more popular through the "grandparent cycle" that previously brought back names like Stanley and Mabel etc so he'll be ahead of the curve.

notangelinajolie · 18/03/2021 01:42

I like it. Kevin from Home Alone is kind of cool and I think it's one of those names that is due a come back. Go for it.

eggandonion · 18/03/2021 08:32

Kevin is a traditional Irish name, not English.
It is the name of My Perfect Cousin I the Undertones song, Kevin is just lovely.

Hailtomyteeth · 21/03/2021 21:41

There's no 'middle class' in Ireland? Come on, now. There really is.

Kanaloa · 22/03/2021 00:02

It’s just a name, I don’t think it has an awful sound at all. Reminds me of Home Alone. I would say, though, that Vinnie won’t stick as a nickname, that’s a nickname for Vincent in my experience. So, if you want your son to be called Vinnie name him Vincent. Otherwise, Kevin is nice.

eggandonion · 22/03/2021 10:49

I'm not sure Kevin is used much in D4. But Ross O'Carroll Kelly would be a good source of middle class Irish names.

AlpiniPraline · 22/03/2021 10:55

I'd use it as a middle name

WiseOwlOne · 24/03/2021 17:41

Lot of older men in D04 called Kevin.

WiseOwlOne · 24/03/2021 17:42

Bo more than in any other post code perhaps but it is just like David or Robert or John here. Normal older man name

eggandonion · 24/03/2021 19:31

There's a few Tadhgs around me, under ten. There is an article in the Irish Times about Tadhgs today, it suggests older men are Dermot. I know a few sixties and seventies called Dermot and Derry.

user1493494961 · 25/03/2021 10:13

I think your son should have his own name, a middle name is often used to honour a family member.
