Kevin?

I’ve name changes as this might be outing. DP really wants to name our little boy Kevin after his grandad who passed a month ago. I know the name isn’t well liked on here but it means a lot to DP and his grandad was a lovely man to be named after. The more I think about it the more I actually like it, I think it sounds nice. He was considering Kevin as a middle name but as I say the more I think about it the more I like it for a first name I also am thinking a nickname could be Vin/Vinny if he doesn’t like his name as he gets older. I was just wondering what everyone thinks and whether we should go for it or not?

I can’t get too worked up about it you know? No it’s not a trendy name but I know under-5s called Anton, Eugene, Brian and Alan and the world hasn’t stopped spinning. Why not use it?

clary · 15/03/2021 15:30

If you like it op, why not.

It's unusual enough to be interesting now. Fwiw I taught an Alan (now about 22) and a Gordon (now about 19); Dd had a Kevin in her year so he would be 20 now. All good names, you can spell them, say them and certainly better than some things I have read on MN!

Pepper54 · 15/03/2021 15:35

I kind of like it. I think go for it. Don’t know who Kevin and Perry are. It’s sweet to name him after a lived family member. I also like Vincent / Vinnie / Vince.

sarah13xx · 15/03/2021 15:39

@BabyKevin no he was a really popular wee boy! The kids didn’t call him Kev either

HamFisted · 15/03/2021 15:44

Kevin is OK. Though it does immediately make me think Shock KEVIN!

That’s made up my mind then :)

No idea who Kevin the Carrot is but I immediately think of "We need to talk about Kevin" (the brilliant but horrifying book!) when I hear the name. But if the name has special meaning to you and you like the sound of it, why not? There'll always be something in popular culture to put you off a name, you never know who's going to become famous and for what!

There speaks a woman who hasn't got a 5ft Kevin the Carrot in her house.

@BabyKevin go for it 😊 always think it’s better to take a slight risk with a name than play it too safe and have the same name as other kids in the class. I’m due in August and my boy’s middle name is going to be Kelvin after my grandpa, very close!

LadyEloise · 15/03/2021 17:21

It's the anglicised name of an old Irish name, Caoimhín.
In Ireland it doesn't have the same connotations that it appears to have in the UK ( which I learned from Mumsnet ).
Here it's a perfectly nice middle class name, there was a famous saint,in the 5 th century, called Saint Kevin and the ruins of his church stand in a beautiful spot in Wicklow with many tourists visiting.
It's not much used now here as James, Daniel, Noah, Jack and Conor etc are popular.

I knew it was an Irish name but I never knew about the ruins in Wicklow, my family are from there so that gives it added meaning.

It's a place called Glendalough and is a lovely scenic place to visit. Well worth a trip if you visit Dublin, it's not too far down the motorway.
If you get away from other tourists it is an ethereal peaceful place.

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 15/03/2021 17:33

Glendalough is a lovely spot. I'll admit I was thinking about it when I first read the thread!

HurryUpSunshine · 15/03/2021 17:37

Not sure why you are asking.

triceratopsmama · 15/03/2021 18:14

@LadyEloise middle class? I've never in all
my life heard of middle class in Ireland. It's not a thing.

triceratopsmama · 15/03/2021 18:15

@LadyEloise by the way I agree with everything else you said about the name. But there is no middle class here.

Mavedrai · 15/03/2021 18:47

Kevin is a great name. I know several Kevins -- the oldest is in his 60s, the youngest is 5. I'm honestly baffled that some people think it will be fodder for bullies.

user64332 · 15/03/2021 18:51

I really like it. In the same way I also love Dennis and Jesse, I am a millennial who watched a lot of movies Grin. So it reminds me of Kevin from Home Alone rather than an old fashioned name.

BabyKevin · 15/03/2021 19:08

@HurryUpSunshine

Not sure why you are asking.
Why? I’ve replied to people who have told me the reasons why I shouldn’t and explained whether they bother me or not and then took on board the majority of the comments saying I should go for it. I’m confused as to what your issue is

triceratopsama
I beg to differ re Irish middle class. There's a whole thread on Mumsnet on that very topic Smile

triceratopsmama · 15/03/2021 19:36

@LadyEloise well I stand corrected in that case. Genuinely never ever heard of it, I'm shocked!🤣

CautiousBlonde · 15/03/2021 19:36

Kevin has a lovely meaning. The one I know is the nicest man I have ever met. 💚 x

CreosoteQueen · 15/03/2021 19:39

It’s old fashioned and unusual now but I don’t dislike the way it sounds.

gottakeeponmovin · 15/03/2021 20:39

I just think it sounds a bit chavvy. But probably his generation won't have those same connotations - I'm suprised out how many years you got tbh. I do actually think Sharon is a nice sounding name though 😂

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 15/03/2021 20:58

It’s more popular than I realised. At least 300 Kevins born every year since 2013!
