Kevin?

I’ve name changes as this might be outing. DP really wants to name our little boy Kevin after his grandad who passed a month ago. I know the name isn’t well liked on here but it means a lot to DP and his grandad was a lovely man to be named after. The more I think about it the more I actually like it, I think it sounds nice. He was considering Kevin as a middle name but as I say the more I think about it the more I like it for a first name I also am thinking a nickname could be Vin/Vinny if he doesn’t like his name as he gets older. I was just wondering what everyone thinks and whether we should go for it or not?

@nameisnotimportant

"I cream Kevin in my head like a fishwife. I don't know why or where I got that from."

I think you mean scream. In which case you got it from the scene in home alone where she realises they've left Kevin behind.

greengrey · 15/03/2021 12:20

No way never.

To me Kevin belongs with Sharon in their Ford Escort.

Awful name - unless you're American and you love it.

I say this as someone who has had two bosses called Kevin and has an uncle with the name.

ChangedName4TheSakeOfIt · 15/03/2021 12:24

I married a Kevin and my dad is a Kevin. And our son's middle name is Kevin.

But it is also a huge laugh in our house. All the odd or funny characters in movies or TV tend to be a Kevin. (Kevin the Gerbil, Kevin the Rowntrees fruit bat, Kevin the Teenager, Kevin the mama bird from UP, Kevin the Minion...... )

Now whenever we hear a new oddball or extra dull character called it my husband throws his hands up laughing and say, "It bloody well would be, wouldn't it?!"

I like it.

PuppyMonkey · 15/03/2021 12:30

It’s a no from me, sorry.

I think Sharon is a lovely sounding name too😂

Really like the nickname Vin! I’m a teacher and have taught a little boy called Kevin before. It sounds a bit unusual for a child at first but I think it’s nice

Was the Kevin you taught ever teased for his name?

I quite like it. I agree with previous poster that it will come back around & be popular again

FuckingFabulous · 15/03/2021 13:15

You just need to choose what you and your husband like. Honestly. My DD is 13 and when I chose her name, people told me it was an old lady name and she'd be feeling "saddled" with it as a teen. When she was four it became one of the most popular names to call a girl, but everyone trashed it when I told them what I'd chosen. Similar happened with my first DS. The name became popular when he was about eight and everyone liked it then. The point I'm trying to make is, try not to give a shit about the crowd and what they're going to think, because if a celebrity names their kid Kevin, they'll think it's lovely, regardless of hating it last week

M0rT · 15/03/2021 13:16

One of my favourite names! It is very popular for babies in the US at the moment, I only know this because my cousin decided against it because it was so popular for her baby last year.
But I think that means that US kids tv will probably have a few cool Kevins in the next few years.

idontlikealdi · 15/03/2021 13:19

I prefer Kevan which is a family name for us, but Kevin is a perfectly good name.

Babiii · 15/03/2021 13:20

If you both like it; it doesn't matter really what anyone else thinks but I love the idea of the vinny twist you mentioned!!!

SleepingStandingUp · 15/03/2021 13:21

@partyatthepalace

I wouldn’t just because a) the Kevin and Tracy thing for adults who are interacting with him and b) to his peers when he grows up it would be like being in your 30s now and called Alan - just a weird old fashioned Dad name.

Overall I know your partner wants to commemorate his Dad, but I don’t think it’s fair to saddle your son with an old fashioned name you’d never otherwise consider. So I’d use it as a middle name.

Who are Kevin and Tracey?

What era would Kevin and Perry be your first thing?

I wouldn't not use a name @BabyKevin because of an assumption on other adults television preferences from a few decades ago.

Would I pick it? No, I know one and he's a dick but I also wouldn't use my own middle name for similar reasons.

We have a Colin in DSs school, he's 3. Kevin is a similar vein and after the initial "oh that's unusual" it'll just be your kids name.

Hailtomyteeth · 15/03/2021 13:24

I cream Kevin in my head like a fishwife
I'm autistic.
I think in pictures.
This might stay with me forever.

Are you Irish, at all? Call him Kevin Barry.

Roszie · 15/03/2021 13:24

Pretty sure he'll be the only one in the whole school if that's a positive.

Dundustin · 15/03/2021 13:25

I like it. It's due for a comback. I know several Kevins and they are all nice people.

I have a brother called Kevin. I think it's a great name. Go for it @BabyKevin

Aloethere · 15/03/2021 14:18

I know someone who named their baby Kevin recently. It did strike me as very old fashioned at first but I don't think it is a particularly good or bad name. A very middle of the road normal name I suppose.

BabyKevin · 15/03/2021 14:55

Thank you everyone! You’ve convinced me. It’s never a name I thought my child would have but I’ve really fell in love with it

‘Kevin’s’ are usually a character to be laughed at/ a bit pathetic in modern culture. I don’t think I’d name a child something which could see them unfairly treated. The name isn’t for you

I honestly have never noticed that, and as a PP has said, it’s getting quite popular in America so I suppose that could all change by the time DS is older

I know a Brian and Simon who go to primary schools and it's surprisingly grown on me. I think that adults will comment more than kids tbh. The only Kevins that my teens would know are Jonas, Hart and Home Alone which are fine. I wouldn't go for Karen but Kevin is fine imo.

PetraRabbit · 15/03/2021 15:10

Another "why not?" from me. I think some Polish people like and use the name. It has a very easy sound for speakers of other European languages.

DP has polish family so I think that’s why Kevin wasn’t really unusual for him as I know it’s quite common amongst people he knows
