Kevin?

I’ve name changes as this might be outing. DP really wants to name our little boy Kevin after his grandad who passed a month ago. I know the name isn’t well liked on here but it means a lot to DP and his grandad was a lovely man to be named after. The more I think about it the more I actually like it, I think it sounds nice. He was considering Kevin as a middle name but as I say the more I think about it the more I like it for a first name I also am thinking a nickname could be Vin/Vinny if he doesn’t like his name as he gets older. I was just wondering what everyone thinks and whether we should go for it or not?

Thank you everyone, you’ve been a lot kinder than I expected!

And yes I agree it’s one of them names that grows on you. When DP suggested it I thought he was mad, but the more I think about it I can really imagine my little boy being called Kevin

Honestly I'm often a bit Hmm at the names people come up with on here.

But there is nothing wrong with Kevin, I don't even mind Kev as a nickname. It is solid, easy to spell, and it has a family link.

Tal45 · 15/03/2021 10:45

I don't like it as it has a lot of negative associations for me but kids your ds's age won't have those and will just accept it. My ds loves Home Alone and that would probably be the only (very positive) association he'd have with the name.

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 15/03/2021 10:46

It's fine imo.

hugocat · 15/03/2021 10:48

Kevin the teenager from Harry Enfield comes to mind. I call my 13 yo DD 'Kevin ' sometimes Grin

Worknoplay · 15/03/2021 10:49

OP, not to offend but have you thought about how your DS will feel about this name in years to come? He will probably be laughed at, called Kevin the Carrot, be told that it's an old fashion name.

I really don't like it at all. Think about how he'd feel, not your and your DP.

Lovely as a middle name, loads of kids have middle names that are associated with a family member, but not as his first name.

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 15/03/2021 10:50

Just remembered I know one now in his twenties, so very unfashionable when named. It's all worked out fine for him!

Nitw1t · 15/03/2021 10:54

Two of my favourite people in the world are called Kevin.

DavidsSchitt · 15/03/2021 10:58

Well the variety of different Kevin's that sprung to mind for PPs on this thread proves the name isn't typecast.

I like it, better than another Jaxson or Fox or Albie.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/03/2021 11:03

Kevin's a fab name and a lovely honour to his Late Grandad.

mogtheexcellent · 15/03/2021 11:05

I like Kevin. Makes me think of Home Alone.

EileenGC · 15/03/2021 11:07

I like it. I have two cousins named Kevin, one is 19 and the other is 5. I also only know of under 20s called Sara/Sarah. It’s not a bad name IMO.

What? That’s bonkers! I haven’t even heard of Kevin the carrot and neither have my kids. Kids don’t get bullied for having old fashioned names because they don’t have those preconceptions.

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 15/03/2021 11:27

I know a little boy called Brian.... At first I winced but now I quite like it..... He's about 6 now and he's just Brian.

DotDotDotDotDot · 15/03/2021 11:45

Sorry OP I don’t think I can get on board with Kevin as a first name. I Feel like these type of honour names are exactly what middle names are for. Saying all that if you really love it and don’t mind others reactions when you introduce your baby then go for it, Good luck!

I really doubt he would be laughed at, especially as there are a lot of old fashioned names around anyway. Also I have a very populair name that was in the top 10 when I was born but people still managed to find ways to make fun of it.

Whenever I see or hear the name Kevin, I cream Kevin in my head like a fishwife. I don't know why or where I got that from. Sometimes I even shout out Kevin 🤷🏼‍♀️

MuddleMoo · 15/03/2021 11:54

It's a nice name.

Not sure people will be going on about Kevin the carrot when he is older!

BabyKevin · 15/03/2021 11:55

Yes I’m not sure Kevin the Carrot will be an issue, and it isn’t like it’s a bad association😂. Kevin from home alone I’m fine with and Kevin the teenager is something I doubt his friends will know about

"He will be laughed at called Kevin the carrot..."

Of all the ridiculous... You think Kevin the carrot will still be a thing when the child grows up?!

Some of the names the heard on here that have been lapped up.

Op I think it's an entirely sensible, normal nice name.

brogo · 15/03/2021 12:03

I like Kevin but I don't like Kev , I would worry he would end up as kev.

misslomi · 15/03/2021 12:09

Go for it! It's my DDads name so I may be biased Grin

HummusAndCarrotSticks · 15/03/2021 12:15

I like it! I know a couple of young Kevins in Scotland. I think Vinny works as a nn too and think it's a great nn too Smile.

Go for it!

RuthW · 15/03/2021 12:16

Perfect reasonable name. Love the pet form of Vinny. Go for it.
