I think it's a bit of a marmite name but it's really growing on me.

I know there's a tv series but I've never seen it and I'm not that worried about the connection.

Any thoughts? Or other suggestions?

Thank you

Roselilly36 · 03/03/2021 21:13

I love it OP.

StillGoingToWork · 03/03/2021 21:17

The only Dexter I know is in his 50s. Time for a comeback?

LunaHeather · 03/03/2021 21:18

It is a lovely name but I think most people just think serial killer.

That might be entertaining though!

TeddyBeans · 03/03/2021 21:18

Was on my list for DS ❤️

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 03/03/2021 21:18

I like it

I know one aged 4

BabyB22021 · 03/03/2021 21:19

It's currently our number 1 choice Smile

bigbluebus · 03/03/2021 21:19

Am I the only one who immediately thought of a piece of beef?

Sexnotgender · 03/03/2021 21:21

I know a dexter in his 30s. It suits him but it’s not my style.

Kiki275 · 03/03/2021 21:25

It may be a TV serial killers name but at least he had a good moral compass and only killed bad guys 😃
I like it x

AbstractHeart · 03/03/2021 21:26

Definite serial killer connotations right now! I would say that it would fade by the time he was in school BUT I've heard they're bringing the series back soon!

BettyOBarley · 03/03/2021 21:27

Before I even opened your thread my first thought was, bit marmite haha, but I really like it!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 03/03/2021 21:27

I know two dogs and the serial killer named dexter.
its a big no from me!

Loopyloututu2 · 03/03/2021 21:27

Fletcher! (You’re probably too young to remember Press Gang OP!)

I quite like it but it’ll prob gets shortened to Dex or Dexy - so there’s that to think of.

Dexterslab · 03/03/2021 21:29

It's my sons name, he's 6.5 years older and there's another Dexter in his school a few years older and I know of one more locally a few years older. I didn't really know about the show amd to be honest only one person has ever mentioned it (although they may be thinking of it!). It was pretty much the only name both me amd my husband agreed on!

My son is Dexter and only one person has ever shortened his name to 'Dext' which he quite liked!
chipsandgin · 03/03/2021 21:30

I like it & had it on my list for DS2, it it was vetoed early by DH partly because of the serial killer thing. Still think it’s lovely though - I wanted him to be a Dex (which is the most likely nn IMO).

BreakfastOfWaffles · 03/03/2021 21:35

Whenever anyone posts about names, you always get responses from people saying it's a pet's name or some fairly tenuous connotation or other. You can say that about pretty much any name really. My nephew is called Dexter, he is 12, and not once in his life has anyone ever mentioned TV serial killers!

CoffeeRunner · 03/03/2021 21:35

It’s not my cup of tea but a friend who was considering Dexter ended up with a baby Blake.

BallsToYouSue · 03/03/2021 21:36

Weird one for me, as I think it sounds nice in an American or Irish accent imo, but I don't like it in, for example, the SE english accent or some Australian accents, where it become Dex-tah.

frutyloops · 03/03/2021 21:36

We have Dexter cows..

It’s a cool name - I just looked up the meaning too and it’s positive and also biblical which is always a good thing!

Dexter is a Latin word meaning "on the right hand, right side" but also "skillfull", "proper" and "favourable". ... It was used in Biblical Latin to refer "the right hand" (mentioned 166 times) often symbolic in biblical verses for strength. The right hand of God, in particular, represents power, authority and judgement.

Loopyloututu2 · 03/03/2021 21:37

Knox and Xavier are similar sounding x-names.

Tanfastic · 03/03/2021 21:39

We nearly called DS Dexter, he's nearly 13 now and at that time we didn't know anybody with that name. We settled on using it as his second name but I love it.

Since then I know about four people who've named their dog Dexter but no children Confused

Arrierttyclock · 03/03/2021 21:39

I know a baby Dexter I think it's a quite a cool name!
