Please help! Had a name picked out for a few weeks (baby is due next month!) but finding girl names really hard and having a middle of the night wobble and Google of other options.

Which is nicest?

Alice
Bryony
Eliza/Elizabeth?
Emily

Alice was the front runner- not sure why having a wobble!

  • Bryony if you want something not top 10
  • Elizabeth nn Eliza my personal no. 1 - no worries re royals, tis a classic
  • Alice - lovely but SO many of em
  • Emily - ditto, and a bit more cutesy than Alice so I like it less

Bryony Elizabeth, Elizabeth Alice, Alice Elizabeth all good combos

Cosmos45 · 28/02/2021 18:07

Bryony and Alice are lovely - if I had to choose between the two I would go with Bryony.

Cosmos45 · 28/02/2021 18:08

@leggingsandwellies I think it was a relief to all of us that your choices were not Chardonnay, L-A or Kim.. Grin

Ellmau · 28/02/2021 19:10

I think Bryony is the prettiest, but they're all OK.

Chunkymenrock · 28/02/2021 19:22

Agree with pp who disliked the lice in Alice. There really are SO many Alices. It's a dreary, dull and quite wet sounding name. Bryony is really lovely.

3CCC · 28/02/2021 19:31

In order of preference
Elizabeth love love love
Alice love love
Bryony love
Emily meh

leggingsandwellies · 28/02/2021 20:24

Not really sure how it can make people think of lice but I guess not everyone can agree! Smile

Alice is my favourite with Eliza as a close second.

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 28/02/2021 20:26

If ‘lice’ really bothered you, perhaps you could use the Welsh spelling Alys?

JungOwlWan · 28/02/2021 20:32

Eliza is lovely
Emily is lovely but too popular
Alice is ok and way to popular
Have forgotten the other name.

anotherpassword · 28/02/2021 20:51

I like Alice best , then Elizabeth, then Emily ( too many in their 20’s now and last of all Bryony because it sounds like Brian!

Bruce2 · 28/02/2021 21:24

Elizabeth

Onlinedilema · 28/02/2021 22:23

Emily

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 01/03/2021 01:44

If you are having a wobble I'd stick with Elizabeth or Alice - these are the most timeless, so most people will know some of different ages and they are unlikely to be names people really dislike (even if some will find them dull). Emily and especially Bryony as it is more unusual will be a bit more marmite.

My personal fave is Elizabeth - partly because of the wide variety of cool namesakes (from Elizabeth I, to Elizabeth Bennett, to Elizabeth Taylor etc); but also simply because it's an easy name to make her own (she can be trendy Eliza or Elsa, retro Betty or Lizzy, cool Libby or Bess - there are over a dozen very different nn choices).

pinkprosseco · 01/03/2021 02:06

Bryony

leggingsandwellies · 01/03/2021 07:03

Thanks again all! Interestingly I just counted up and it's an almost three way tie between Eliza/Elizabeth, Alice and Bryony (in that order but with only a vote or two between them).

Emily in comparison seems far, far less liked!

I'm still worried about the royal thing despite what a few PPs have said. DS's name is extremely high profile royal (as in will be king while I'm still alive) so worried the link is just too strong to use.

In which case Alice takes it? (Which was our original choice). Obviously not going to fully decide off the basis of this thread but it's proving very helpful!

Alice or Eliza. Bryony is quite dowdy imo. Emily is nice but overused

Stickytreacle · 01/03/2021 07:40

Elizabeth, the only one I dislike on your list is Bryony.

ParisJeTAime · 01/03/2021 08:00

I'm not keen on Emily. It's completely inoffensive obviously, but I just find it bland, weak and insipid / wet. I feel the same about Millie / Molly / Maisie though. Again, perfectly ok and well liked names, which I just don't happen to like myself. But it isn't my baby!

I think a lot of people here have said they do like Emily, but they find it overused. I think it's around top ten?

Popularity doesn't especially bother me, so I think you need to consider if it is important to you. If not and you love Emily more than the others, then just go for it Smile. I would, if I loved the name.

PenguinBarnotBird · 01/03/2021 09:25

Elizabeth. By a landslide.

leggingsandwellies · 01/03/2021 13:41

Popularity definitely doesn't bother me at all! I feel there are so many girl names about at the moment that even a top 10 name is unlikely to have lots in every class!

Whatsyourflava · 01/03/2021 15:25

Alice!
I love it. I know popularity doesn't bother you anyway but I don't know any little
Alice's.

I also love Emily too by the way. A lovely list.

EdgeOfACoin · 01/03/2021 18:47

I like Alice and Elizabeth. Then Emily.

Actually, I also like Bryony but your son must have a very traditional name and I don't think Bryony would go well with it.

NoWayHosier · 01/03/2021 18:51

Eliza is beautiful.
I like Elizabeth but not quite as much as Eliza. Still lovely though.
I don't like Bryony.
Alice is fine.
Emily is very bland indeed.

toobusytothink · 01/03/2021 18:52

Alice is beautiful
