Hi!
What names did you love but just weren't brave enough to use?

We know a Cosmo, a juniper and a Gabriel all under 2 years old.

We have a DD who I won’t name as it’s outing but nothing id consider brave! For a boy we will use Maverick as a middle name and if we have another daughter she will be Vesper.

@SleepingStandingUp, Water was an autocorrect for ‘Walter’.and no, the reverse of posh, bottom of the WC, but, family aside, pretty much everyone I know these days is several notches up the social scale. I don’t think it’s true that MC and UC people can ‘get away’ with more unusual names, though, it’s more that unusual working-class names are considered ‘chavvy’ on Mn, rather than aspirationally quirky.

(@Fleapit here, but did my regular NC since last post)

I wanted Betty and Enid...30 years ago! They are fairly popular names now, so wouldn't be 'too' far out in a Year 4 classroom, but 30 years ago would have raised a few eyebrows 🤣 My mother nearly fell off her chair when I said I was thinking about those names...we went with far more conservative options in the end 🤷‍♀️

Thank god they didn't call him Water 🤣🤣

I think if a WC person and a MC / UC person picked the same name, and posted seperate threads where they asked and made clear their class, the same name would be chavvy on one thread and quirky on another. Or "pretentious / try hard which is the ultimate sin on a name board. WC aren't allowed to pick names outside of their class

Marigold.
Goldie for short.

Still a little regretful. We have a VERY strong surname so it would have been a full on name.

There was a thread very similar to this 13 years ago. Something like What name do you secretly like but it was too pretentious to use? It gave me the idea for DD's name Grin. I've told her this story, she is not impressed.
(Bloody hell I've been on here too long)

DD's name has been mentioned on this thread and I'm SO glad we went for the 'brave' option as it suits her beautifully.

I also liked Coraline and Cordelia but didn't want DD to have a film title name. And for DS I secretly wanted Barnabas but didn't even suggest it to DH as I knew what he'd say. Although he liked the names Trent or Anderson which I definitely don't regret vetoing (DS has a name always in the top 25, very normal).

And I bet if we could compare the two threads, a significant number of names rejected then as being ‘too brave’ or ‘pretentious’ are now pretty mainstream.

My parents seriously wanted to call me Fanny. Born in early 1970s. I would never have survived the playground bullying, but apparently they thought it was a lovely name and couldn't see the problem.

Fortunately my lovely granny intervened, and told them they really really couldn't.....
